Guest guest
Chapter 18. Conclusion--The Perfection of Renunciation TEXT 28 ayuktah prakrtah stabdhah satho naiskrtiko 'lasah visadi dirgha-sutri ca karta tamasa ucyate SYNONYMS ayuktah--without reference to scriptural injunctions; prakrtah--materialistic; stabdhah--obstinate; sathah--deceitful; naiskrtikah--expert in insulting others; alasah--lazy; visadi--morose; dirgha-sutri--procrastinating; ca--also; karta--worker; tamasah--in the mode of ignorance; ucyate--is said to be. TRANSLATION And that worker who is always engaged in work against the injunction of the scripture, who is materialistic, obstinate, cheating and expert in insulting others, who is lazy, always morose and procrastinating, is a worker in the mode of ignorance. PURPORT In the scriptural injunctions we find what sort of work should be performed and what sort of work should not be performed. Those who do not care for those injunctions engage in work not to be done, and such persons are generally materialistic. They work according to the modes of nature, not according to the injunctions of the scripture. Such workers are not very gentle, and generally they are always cunning and expert in insulting others. They are very lazy; even though they have some duty, they do not do it properly, and they put it aside to be done later on. Therefore they appear to be morose. They procrastinate; anything which can be done in an hour they drag on for years . Such workers are situated in the mode of ignorance. Now this is me , I can reaally see myself here in this verse and purport I can become Conscious in an hour but I procrastinate drag it on for years Deep in the lower mode of tamo-guna /images/graemlins/confused.gif /images/graemlins/confused.gif /images/graemlins/confused.gif /images/graemlins/confused.gif /images/graemlins/confused.gif

Do this for all 3 gunas and you will see what guna is predominant in your life. Numbers for statements corresponding each guna: Sattva 1,3,4,5,10,12,13,17,25,28,34,37,38,42,56. Priitaa
This is an interesting test, and helpful, but I'm not so sure that answers which come in the form of numbers are always the best way to go, or that the test would work for devotees often enough. For example: " 6. In conducting my activities, I do not consider traditional wisdom." Much of what Prabhupada taught us is contradictory to traditional 'wisdom.' Such as, giving women gayatri and thread and making them priests, and there is more. or "21. I am constantly dissatisfied with my position in life." Those who chant Hare Krishna, this mantrra also means to have all material happiness taken away. So it is not uncommon to find very good natured devotees who are very unhappy with their position in life, which has less to do with materialism and more to do with the touch of Krishna's, or Srimati Radharani's hand in their life. "1. I am straightforward in my dealings with other people." Many devotees have long ago learned, due to either religious prejudice, things that happened out on sankirtana, or even with other deovtees who were not so honest, that when dealing with a dishonest person, do not reveal your mind! "10. I am good at using willpower to achieve goals." And we know many a temple president or other 'authority' who did so! hehe However, other points could certianly help devotees: "8. I usually feel discontented with life." Alot of devotees feel this way. For some, it can be impersonalism (especially temple devotees, tho its not that if one is a temple devotee they 'must' be acting this way. No.) Others just have emotional issues they never looked at and often dont want to, but its stemming over into their daily life and they dont know why life is so unworkable. This does not make them a bad devotee, just bad at relationships. "23. When things are tough, I often bail out." This is a common problem, from temple authorities to relationships. "33. I often feel fearful." Many devotees experience fear when they are in maya. In that case, this would be a good thing, as long as its not immobolizing or damaging. "55. I often act violently towards others." Now thats a big one devotees should start looking at. Especially with all the woman and child abuse, but men also abuse men! Or bully them, rank and pecking order. I remember one 'teacher' from another country who came to america, was not getting along with this Indian young man, and he hated him so much he physically attacked him! So it goes on with men too. We need to turn inward and start asking 'why the violence?' Of course, I know, and you probably know, but when a person is violent, they generally are oblivious at the time. I didn't mean to tear all you wrote apart and was just haivng a little fun. /images/graemlins/smile.gif I think its a good test in general. Just some things fit the devotee, and others don't. I_love_krishna_
So! it does not really tell what sort of person you are... but it does tell what sort of person you think you are! /images/graemlins/smile.gif ! Thanks that just makes me feel better. If I get a low score - that would mean that I have very low self esteem. If I get a normal score- that would mean I am honest. (rajas) If I get a high score- that would mean I am full of my self. ----------------------- This test is only valid of another person who knows me better takes this test. Unfortunately, no one can be like that except krishna. The valid conclusion would be Krishna is the only person who is going to give you an accurate answer... But can't he do this with out taking the test? so this test is basically to fool ourselves! /images/graemlins/grin.gif Or we have nothing better to do (tamasic guna) so we take this test. But it is a very nice way to fool ourselves though.
Gauracandra
Does anyone know of a person who has actually positively changed their mode (goodness, passion, ignorance) in a major way? I kind of think the modes must be somewhat genetic as well as environmental (if you are raised bad, you will likely turn out bad). But a lot of people who are in the mode of goodness just seem like they were born that way, and their kids are that way etc....

Govindaram
Hare Krishna I find the whole subject of the modes of material nature interesting, but what you say about being 'born that way' seems to be true, most people i.e. are generally very happy go-lucky people and yet some are more shy, introvert, so the modes of nature must be acting differently on these person(s), but its impossible to change you modes without puting so effort into it. Ps that test was just for fun (Priita & I_L_K) /images/graemlins/smirk.gif ------- nitai-gauranga, nitai-gauranga jayasacinandana, gaura-hari All glories to Lord Nityananda and Lord Caitanya! the son of Saci-devi, who is Krsna Himself in golden hue.
I_love_krishna_
My grandfather was one of the people who changed his mode. He was basically a normal "hindu" at that time, who had no Job and was subject to discrimination by the Nizami Muslim Government, when Indians got their Independence, the Nizams fell. He then knew that the only way to change the people's poverty is bring these issues to the government, the best way to do that was Media. He was a poor(no money) guy , he worked hard by working on multiple jobs and became a Journalist. He changed the villages by reporting about them to the general public. Politicians can't ignore the issues brought on by media. he is now a famous journalist in India who was also the editor of Eenadu and other papers.... I know he is self situated because, even though he does not express his Bhakthi about Krishna, his humility, his wiseness and his intellect tell me that he is truly self situated. He talks about Gita though... and explains how it could be used to become peaceful at ease... ------------------------- So prabhu, I think you can change your Mode from the Mode of Ignorance to the Mode of Satvism. It can be done. My mother's father did it and so can I and any one else...
