Are you getting tonsured at Tirupati?

If so there are several reasons for this

1. to show surrender of ego to the Lord

2. Part of the story of tirupati Balaji is that Sri Lakshmi became angry with Sri Vishnu over a misunderstanding.

Missing his beloved, Lord Vishnu went to search of her and this search brought him to earth. Ultimately his quest brought him to the Seshadri hills where he stopped to rest in an anthill. Upset by the separation between Vishnu and Lakshmi, Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva decided to intervene. Taking the guise of a cow and a calf they went to live at the place of a Chola king.

The cowherd took them everyday to graze in the Seshadri hills where the cow would secretly visit the anthill where Vishnu was living without sustenance. Emptying her milk, the cow would then return to the palace.

The cowherd was angry as the cow never yielded any milk to him. He watched movements carefully and his explorations brought him to the anthill. In trying to ascertain what lay beneath the anthill, he struck it with an axe thus injuring Vishnu on the head.

It is said that the cowherd died out of shock after seeing the Lord rise from the anthill with blood dripping down His lotus face. Anyway, some say that goddess Parvati came to our lord Sri Vishnu in the form of a cowherdess and gave some of her hair to Him to cover the place where he had been injured and His beautiful hair was missing.

3. One more reason is that hair can be sold for money, and money is a good thing to give especially at this temple, because the Lord sought a loan of one crore and 14 lakh coins of gold from Kubera and had Viswakarma, the divine architect create heavenly surroundings in the Seshadri hills in preparation for His marriage to Padmavathi. (Presumably because Maa Lakshmi was angry with Him /images/graemlins/blush.gif)

I pray that you have a good darshan of the Lord, and remember when you go in for darshan that this murthy is self-manifested. In reality it is not a murthy at all, it is really our Govinda, as he stayed here on earth after enacting His leela at tirupati-tirumala. That is why Tirupati is called

kaliyuga-vaikuntham!
