Guest guest
what do the devotiess think of medication that makes you happy? I personaly think it is pointless to put medication in your body to make urself happy, because before this time, there where no medication, and everyone was just happy without being drugged up. theist
Cannot make one happy. The soul can only find this inloving Krsna. But for those of us who are wrapped up in body consciousness it can be of benefit to negate excess pain. I used to get these horrendous temsion headaches. When one would begin al I wanted to do was sleep. I couldn't read chant or anything. But if I took a few aspirin it would dull the pain and give enough temporary relief so that I could get on with my life. It wasn't addressing the underlying cause, it was only temporary, but I was always thankful for the reprieve.
Guest guest
Our goal is not to become happy anyway, nor should we consider that a measure of advancement, spiritual or material. At the beginning, Krsna generally provides some such motivation, but becoming addicted to chanting the Holy Names requires a continuous committment at some point. If we can come to appreciate the "pain of separation" and thereby begin to empathize with other souls, our service will take on a more personal role. Then that eternal loving relationship we all hanker for starts to take shape in our heart-of-hearts.
zackv
It's pointless to just take medication to be happy. It isn't, however, pointless if you have a serious medical condition that prevents you from living your life normally. Clinical depression, for example. It's impossible to be yourself (and therefore to fully apply Krishna consciousness) when you are affected by it. Medication will get rid of it and put you on a normal mental slate to work with. For myself I have O.C.D. and it makes it impossible to go about normal living much of the time, and I'm going to need to start medication. Guest guest
I was on anti-depressants for almost 3 years after my 2nd daughter was born. I was able to go off of them on my own last month. It was right around the same time I started chanting 16 rounds a day. I feel like this rreally had an impact on my state of mind and made me so much more at peace and able to be a good mom without the help of medication. Prabhupada always said chant Hare Krishna and be happy, he really meant it, because it worked for me!
zackv
I'm really glad to hear that! Keep it up. It's an encouraging story. I found in my own experience that my OCD makes its worst attacks when I am trying to concentrate. It crippled my ability to chant. It's different for everyone, you just have to do what's necessary to get better.
