How to become strong?

I am a veggie, so I am finding it difficult to put on muscle. Are there instructions on how to become strong, as per Vedas/gita? Is there a god of strength in hinduism, who can give me strngth?

Try soya/whey protein supplements (from health food store) after working out with heavy weights every second day. You will be strong in no time. If soya is not available, then chick peas (garbonzo beans) or lentils are an excellent source of the protein that is required to rebuild the stressed muscles, making them stronger.

 

In the sixties I went to the university doctor to get steroids since my competition from UCLA and UTAH State were using steroids and beating me in the track weight events. She got me onto the soya stuff instead and it worked very well.

 

When I lift weights I remember Lord Ramacandra and the next opportunity I will have to help lift gigantic Lord Jagannatha off His royal cart at Ratha Yatra (ooooo, next Saturday!):<blockquote>O King, the pastimes of Lord RAmacandra were wonderful, like those of a baby elephant. I dont have enough money to buy those foods, I haven't even heard of soy or whey protein, do you mean soya beans? I am from india, hence the confusion regarding these terms. I am lifting weights, but it is of no use. How the heck am I going to lift big when I dont have enough strength in my arms? Each time I try to lift, I fail and I've sort of hit an impasse, owing to my arm strength, or the lack thereof. You see, even though weight trainign increases muscle mass, you still need arm power to lift the damn thing. That's my problem, I dont have enough power, being veggie. I am tempted to eat meat, at least for a few months, and once I get strong, I could revert to veggie diet. But I dont want to do that, it doesn't sound right, you know. I want to be veggie forever, but I also want to be strong. Can't one of the numerous hindu gods do something about this pathetic state of affairs? lol. Is hanuman listening? As for rama, the guy is cool. I love him.

The sooner after your workout that you ingest food (especially protein, but at least a few hundred calories of something), the faster your muscles will recover and the less pain you'll have the next day. You need protein after lifting weights. Lentils (as in dahl soup) will provide that - some nice rice and lentil soup. Chick peas are very cheap too and common in an Indian diet. Soya did mean soya beans as you guessed. But don't, never eat meat - you would lose your ability to use strength with honour.

 

Don't over-train; not every day. The body needs time to recover. This is when you get stronger. In the beginning you may need two even three days off between workouts since the body is not accustomed to being stressed so much and the joints and linkages need time to adjust to your new demands on them.

 

For each exercise, warm up with 70% max weight doing 8 repetitions. Wait five minutes. Then do 3 repetitions (up down up down up down) with almost max weight. Rest 5 minutes and add a bit more weight. Do another 3 repetitions. Rest another five minutes and do one last set of 3 repetitions. Each time add a little more weight. You will see yourself become stronger day by day. Add weight while you can still do at least 2 repetitions. When you can't do 2 then lower the weight until you can do at least two.

 

If you can't lift 50 pounds then you try 20 and then 30 and then 35 and then 37. Like that, you find your starting maximum. From 37, you would gradually increase, adding a pound or two every week or so as you become stronger. For the first few workouts you would warm up with (70% max) 25 pounds, and then try lifting three sets of 37 pounds three repetitions each set. Then you will be ready to add a pound or two on the second set. You will see that you can increase the weight over time. And that equates with strength.

 

Start with what you can do and scientifically increase the weight and strength from there.
