Guest guest
I dont want esoteric answers, but realistic ones. In his human form, why did he choose black skin color? Was there a purpose to it, like getting rid of color prejudices?
vanamali
Could be! Some of the oldest bhakti writings were from the Tamil alwars. Quite fitting that Krishna, who is the perfect object of bhakti, should be of a darker skin color.

Avinash
they say krishna was a good-looking guy. Then how come he had dark skin? There is an implicit assumption behind this question. The assumption is that dark skinned cannot be good looking. But, is this assumption correct?
vanamali
There is some opinion in India today that the more "fair" the better. People in the US want to be darker (going to tanning booths to bake themselves) and people in India want to be lighter (not all people- but you *will* find "fairness creams" on the market). In both cases I think there is a bit of status involved. Favoring "fairness"- it means you probably have a job inside rather than working in the fields. Favoring "darkness" you have all the time in the world to lay out in the sun like the stars do. At any rate... The truly beautiful people are those from whom the sun of the inner Self- Lord Sri Krishna- is shining through the eyes, through the smile, through the voice, through the attitude, etc. And as for the Lord HIMSELF, who is the source of all beauty... my GOD, if you prefer the look of "fair" skin now, you will change your mind when you see that lovely black-bodied SRI KRISHNA! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Kulapavana
Lord Krishna was not really black, like lets say Africans today. Compared to other people in the area where He appeared His complexion was darker, often described as bluish, like a rain cloud. His brother, Lord Balarama on the other hand was more white than other people. These are the non-esoteric explanations.
Shob
Krsna is not black, but sky blue. Because He is the sky. He is unique, attractive. He can choose any clr, he is rich, handsome, famous, intelligent, also hv renounciation. Why not Blue or black?
Guest guest
But the pic posted by Vanamali is not merely dark brown or sky blue, but pure black. So how can you say it is not african color?
vanamali
I've never seen a truly "black" African person. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif Usually people are variations of cream, red, pink, brown...
Kulapavana
Lord Krishna is depicted in many ways, and sometimes His Murti (Deity form in the Temple) is made from a black stone. However, He is described in detail in the Vedic scriptures, by people who knew Him personally. Besides, do not think that the only black poeple in this world are Africans. It is merely a common pigmentation in people living in tropical climate. There are black Tamils in southern India, black aborigenes in Australia and almost black Indians in South America. Guest guest
like Krsna was a good looking guy, why black. or even why black? Maybe he was from africa, because there is tectonic evidence that india broke away from africa and slammed into asia. Maybe he chose black because black people are much more beautiful than pale faces. Actually, the colors on this plane are perverted reflections of the real colors of the spiritual world. So we try to mix up some balck, but we cannot get the right color. We can paint Srimati Radharani gold, but we cannot create a molten gold. We can paint Srimati Lalita platinum silver, but we cannot come up with the color of lightening. Actually, this conversation is silly. Why does god have a peacock feaqther, why does he appear as a playful child, why is he a bad baby boy always in trouble with mother yasoda. Why why why. Because he is God, and he doesnt have to ask if it is okay with us if he wants to be black. Our standard of beauty is like the standard of hogs. we all think that the female hog is so beautiful, but she is actually a big fat pig. Krsnas opulences are his, not to be judged by our barbaric standard.. good looking guy, fer christ sake. mahak

Tuls
Actually, Krishna's skin color doesn't exactly described as black anywhere in the scriptures. Most often they say blackish, and farther explain that the color of Krishna's body is SHYAM, and this sort of color doesn't exist in the material world. I remember even reading somewhere that His body composed of all the existing colors combined together because all the colors are emanate from Him. Some scriptures give examples of this color as somewhat similar to the dark bluish rain cloud or a darkest sapphire. However, it's impossible to create a Deity of the similar color because it's doesn't exist, so most Krishna's Deities created from black marble, and then the Lord out of His causeless mercy enters the Deity form so we can worship Him in our material conditions. We should also remember that even Bible says that the God is darkness.
vanamali
Krishna means black (dark), does it not? as in "krishna paksha"= dark lunar fortnight... is that correct?
Tuls
Krishna does mean black in Sanskrit, which is one of the meanings of this word. He also called Shymasundara, meaning His body of the beautiful shyam color. This not our ordinary material black color but the transcendental black. During the rasa-dance Krishna’s body described to have a color of the emerald because the golden hue of the gopies bodies make a reflection on his bluish skin. Guest guest
Gee why are you all so concerned about Krishna being black. I think He looks absloutely stunning in all BLACK. No comparison. I tried to think of Krishna as "fair", but my mind simply likes Krishna as BLACK. Not just dark blue or cloud colored - but BLACK with RED on lips, inside of ears, corners of eyes, palm and sole.
Guest guest
Haven't any of you heard....BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL!!! If you can't love a black skinned Krsna then you don't love Krsna. Krsna MEANS Black in Sanskrit. Not light blue! How much clearer can you get? Open your heart to blackness AND to Africans!!! Sacrifice your inner racist and transcend your ideas of beauty! vanamali
I love the black Krishna. Ok, He is a little bit blue because of year after year after year of abhishekams with milk, and other liquids, and being rubbed with sandal paste and other substances... He has a little bit of a bluey tinge to Him sometimes. But generally He is black. At least "my Krishna" is. /images/graemlins/smile.gif hehe
Guest guest
For all those of the world who wonder. Through my third eye I have perceived Lord Krsna, and like all who are beyond us mere humans; his prescence is fused with your perception! Why waste your few years on this planet dragging Lord Krsna to a world of limitations. Have you forgotten Lord Krsna can be any color he wishes? Or all, Or none. But all forms would be beautiful. If you wish to escape Kali-Yuga serve his Lordship, and end such foolish talk.
Guest guest
We are not arguing, we are just talking about the Lord. /images/graemlins/smile.gif As long as we are thinking about the Lord constantly, we will definitely escape kaliyuga /images/graemlins/wink.gif
Tuls
I think our biggest problem that we are trying to comprehend Krishna through our material senses. In reality, He can’t be compared to anyone in this material world, so we can’t say He looks like an African, Indian or European because it doesn’t make any sense. Just like no woman on this planet can be compared to the beauty of the apsaras (heavenly damsels) or no man can be compared to the beauty of the demigods. Especially people of the Kali-yuga, do not possess beautiful features when compared to the people of other Yugas as described in Mahabharata and Srimad Bhagavatam. What to say about the Supreme Lord, who is the source of all beauty.
Tuls
You are absolutely right. Isn't it great that the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna is the topic of our conversations and even disagreements. We could be talking about G. W. Bush and his policies in Iraq, but instead we are discussing the features of the Lord Sri Krishna! How wonderful.
