Guest guest
Hi, I am writing an article on Indian atomic theory and the divisons of time. However, there is so much conflicting information online, that I don't know where to start. I have gathered so far this: Srimad Bhagvatam: Paramanu = Primodial atom 2 Paramanu = Anu 6 Anu = Trasarenu 3 Trasarenus = Truti 100 Truti = Vedha 3 Veda = Lava 3 Lava = Nimesha 3 Nimesha = Ksana 5 Ksana = Kashta 15 Kashthas = Laghu 15 Laghu = Nadika 2 Nadika = Muhuruta Sri Pradhupa calculates them as follows: one truti - 8/13,500 second one laghu - 2 minutes one vedha - 8/135 second one danda - 30 minutes one lava - 8/45 second one prahara - 3 hours one nimesa - 8/15 second one day - 12 hours one ksana - 8/5 second one night - 12 hours one kastha - 8 seconds one paksa - 15 days Free dictionary.com: A leekshaka is 1/60th of a pranamu, or 1/15th of a second; a lava is 1/60th of a leekshakamu, or 1/900th of a second; a renu is 1/60th of a lavamu, or 1/54,000th of a second; a truti is 1/60th of a renuvu, or the time it takes for a needle to pass through a lotus leaf, or 1/3,240,000th of a second. 1908 century wrtier Ram Prasad in his book on vedas: I shall begin with a Truti as the least division of time. 26-2/3 truti = 1 nimesha = 8/45 second. 18 nimesha = 1 kashtha = 3-1/5 seconds = 8 vipala. 30 kashtha = 1 kala = 1-3/5 minutes = 4 pala. 30 kala = 1 mahurta = 48 minutes = 2 ghari. 30 mahurta = 1 day and night = 24 hours = 60 ghari. 30 days and nights and odd hours = 1 Pitruja day and night = 1 month and odd hours. 12 months = 1 Daiva day and night = 1 year = 365 days, 15', 30", 31”. In Subash Kak's book that calculates the speed of light from the Purans: A nimesa is 16/73 of a second, as deduced from the following in the Purans: 15 nimesa = 1 Kastha 30 Kastha = 1 Kala 30 Kala = 1 Mahutra 30 Malhutra = 1 day and night As you can see it's extremely confusing. Can someone help shed some light on this. Also, what is the definition of a paramanu and anu? I have seen both used interchangably to mean atom. However, a paramanu is defined as "beyond any atom" and cannot be divided further. This would mean it is a quark, and an anu, a sub-atomic particle, and Trasarenu an atom. Yes, I know it's confusing. Please help.
