LUCKNOW, INDIA, 24 October, 2005: Badrinath temple is considered as one of the most sacred centres of pilgrimage situated in the lofty Himalayan heights. As per the tradition, the temple would be open for six months, i.e from Hindu calender month Vaishaka to Karthik, for darshan to common people. For the remaining six months, i.e from Margashsish to Chaitra, the temple would be closed for darshan by common people as it is the devas turn for Lord's darshan. Lord Vishnu's six-month slumber in his abode of the temple may give the Uttaranchal police a tormenting bout. The Lord's annual repose begins on November 17 the date when the temple closes for public. The security personnel deployed here normally begins during the winter months as the entire township migrates to the warmer limes of Chamoli. Knee deep in snow, they shall stand guard keeping a hawk eyed vigil on the Lord's newly acquired treasure trove which has turned him richer by a millions of dollars a fortnight ago. "The "Kanak singhaasan" (golden throne), a gift by a diamond merchant, has brought about a major swell in His fortune. And herein lie the trouble although it has had no incident of loot or dacoity so far largely because there was nothing to plunder. The throne, a seven-feet-long and four-feet-wide beauty weighs 80 kgs, of which 51 kgs is pure gold with intricate embellishments and an embossed Sun is approximately US$1.1 million. The offering, made on October 12 on the Dussehra day, is a gift jointly sponsored by 300-odd members of the Lakhi clan of the late Seth Vishnu Das Bhola Ram Lakhi, a diamond merchant from Mumbai. The throne arrived with police escort at Hardwar, Srinagar, Karnprayag, Nand Prayag, Joshimath en route from Delhi to Badrinath. It has been formally installed in the sanctum sanctorum after an elaborate ceremony held on the Vijaydashmi day. Now, without waiting for a formal request from the Badrinath mandir samiti, the DGP headquarter rushed additional force to Badrinath. According to Uttranchal DGP Kanchal Chawdhary, adequate security arrangements will be ensured throughout this winter. All this, when the Lord dozes off peacefully just a few inches away.
