Curtains for 'Rachel Corrie' The Nation Mon Feb 27, 2:46 PM ET The Nation -- So much for freedom of speech, let alone thought The play My Name Is Rachel Corrie, directed in London by actor Alan Rickman and due to open in New York City in March, has been canceled for fear of controversy. The play adapts the diaries of the 23-year-old woman from Seattle who was murdered in Rafah in 2003, when she was deliberately run down by an Israeli Defense Forces bulldozer. Rachel had traveled to the Gaza Strip during the last intifada as an activist for the International Solidarity Movement. My Name Is Rachel Corrie has enjoyed two sell-out runs in London at the Royal Court Theatre and great critical acclaim; it was due to open at the New York Theatre Workshop in the East Village. In private conversations with those who staged the play in London, the Theatre Workshop cited the election of Hamas in Palestine, Ariel Sharon's medical condition and the furor over the Danish cartoons as reasons for refusing to stage the play. "The decision is incredibly frustrating," said one of the people closely associated with the play. "It underestimates the intelligence and compassion of the American people." During a period of such intense reflection about freedom of speech and the so-called "clash of civilizations," the play's cancellation is a useful reminder of the forces at work in constructing and limiting America's freedom to access the views and experiences even of other Americans. How is the American public supposed to develop a civilized understanding of what their government is bankrolling in Israel and Palestine when plays like this cannot be shown? Guest guest
girl who hates America and commited suicide by demonstrating in front of a moving bulldozer. A Darwin Award nominee. There are photos of her burning American flags in the Gaza strip. Good riddance to her and her ilk!!!
Guest guest
because she was NOT murdered! Since when is running in front of a bulldozer murder? Remember THIS you stupid protesters, if you can't see the operator, HE CAN'T SEE YOU! DOH! She wast NOT "deliberatley run down by a bulldozer", she slipped and fell between the treads and the blade, which brushed against her and she died as a result. When you mess with the bulls you're gonna get the horns! She was protecting a smuggling tunnel for terrorist's arms. I WISH the bulldozer had run over her deliberately, but these days the good guys are too squeamish to do what must be done.
Kulapavana
you obviously missed the point. the article was about a lack of freedom of expression in NY, or self imposed censorship. the diaries of that girl are very interesting, and the success of that play in UK prove it. because the cultural life in NY is largely controlled by people decidedly favoring Israel (there is huge sarcasm in this understatement in case you miss that also) the play was cancelled. there is no FREEDOM of expression when it comes to the self interest of these people.
