Hari Om

Dearest Beloved Mother

You are Yoga Incarnate - I was taught by Goswami Kriyananda that

Yoga means to Yoke - to bring under control the ego, mind and body

complex - so that they do not drag you about like a helpless victim -

Krishna reigning in the horses is the best analogy - through God's

Grace we can gain control over our lives to see that Mother has been

in control all along

I followed all 4 tapes and book of Chandi today and it was like

Shree Maa and Swamiji were there right with me. It took me almost 7

hours: 6am to 1pm, what a blissful experience!

Just last week I had opened the Bhagwad Gita (From Devi Mandir)

and I was wondering about re-reading about this topic of Perfect

Union (Yoga) in Chapters 5 and 6 ... there is question asked by Shree

Maa. Briefly as I understand, keeping contol over mind, body and

senses during performing detached Karma as an offering to God with

full dedication, surrender and devotion to Him only is Union or Yoga

and that has to be practised every moment of life.

I have been with Devi Mandir for almost 7+ years and I have

attended many many poojas with the family of Devi Mandir. I never got

initiated because there was no need and we all read, pray, sing, eat,

dance, ... together. I recall sleeping in the temple and waking up

early in the morning to Maa's voice or bell for Aarti ... That's True

Mother!

When I think of yoga, I think of sometimes desperate yearning for the

completion only God can give; I think of the tedium of sitting daily,

of stretching muscles and tendons and buried emotions and stiff ideas;

I think of the prana shakti who graciously reigns in my thoughts and

opens my heart and mind; I think of filling my heart so full of

joyful love for God there is room left for nothing else; I think of

my mind dead to itself.

When I think of yoga, I think of piercing the veil of mind with a

single narrow thought, like an arrow speeding forth from the bow; I

think of Surya exploding like a nova with a billion tinkling

fragments of fire, so beautiful; I think of knowing, with a certainty

beyond the absolute, that all the pain and anguish I've ever

experienced is over, that it is as a breath of wind; I think of the

realization that life is joy-filled and beautiful beyond description.

When I think of yoga, I try to look forward with hope and faith to the

day when these fruits of yoga will be mine, and I will finally be able

to act with goodness and live in service.

I always think of yoga first in terms of the classical definition of

Patanjali, that yoga is chitta vritti nirodha, the cessation of the

waves of the mind-stuff. Besides being the first principle of yoga I

learned, I find it to be an accurate description of the mechanics of

experience, one focused on the mind. But yoga means other things to

me as well.

Thank you, Maa, for that profound question!

When we say "yoga" we mean union with God, of course, but how do we

get there?

My attempt to define yoga comes from the Narada Bhakti sutras

(trans. Prem Prakash). Bhakti, Narada says, "is expressed by

sanctifying all activities," or, as Swamiji is fond of saying,

by "making the altar bigger."

When we strive to stay conscious of God, offering Her every thought

and deed, we are doing yoga. (And personally I find it's much less

challenging to stand on my head than it is to offer Her my grocery

shopping or yard work!)

Dear Maa,

My Pranams to you and Swamiji.

I know Swamiji's definition of the word yoga (its root

is in Yuj which means unite) and I know the definition

which another great soul had given from the Gita

(Samathvam Yogam ucchyate).

I interpret Yoga as anything that pulls me towards God

, and strengthens my feelings towards God, as anything

that establishes and reinforces the fact - that my

only relationship is with Him .

Yoga is that which ties me to the feet of the Lord and

makes me forget everything else.

Love you,

Latha

  • 4 weeks later...

Yoga is knowing that everything I experience is really just me.

Whatever I am experiencing is none other than a reflection of my

desires.

In other words when I see something beautiful, it is only because I

have desired to see something beautiful, and that I am actually that

beauty that I see. Same applies for something ugly or undesirable --

it is only a reflection of the ugly and undesirable within me.

In Yoga, there is really no "I,my,me,you, that," or "this."

In Yoga there is only EXPERIENCING. And it cannot even be rightly be

called this -- yoga is beyond all labelling, thoughts and conceptions.

Sorry for the late answer, Maa -- it was a deep question that took

some "reflection."

"You" are loving, "you" are beautiful, and "I" LOVE "YOU!"

Jai Maa!

AUM
