Speak Sanskrit in 10 Days

Courtesy & Copyright Chinmaya Mission

By Swami Prasannatmaanand Saraswati

In the course of an interview, Dr Raja Ramana, one of India's

foremost scientists & think ex - Chairman of the Bhabha Atomic

Research Centre was asked whether he had any regrets in life. Then

70, Dr Ramana replied, 'Yes I did not learn Sanskrit'. Remember his

words ever since. Just last week Sonia from U.S.A. wrote in asking

whether I could translate for her ten English phrases into Sanskrit.

I do not know Sanskrit but spoke to a friend who put me in touch

with Uday Acharyaji. Udayji was nice enough to mail me corresponding

Sanskrit words. While speaking to him I realized that a number of

people might want to go through a crash course in Sanskrit. So I

called up the Chinmaya Mission & asked them if they had a book on

Learning Sanskrit. Fortunately they did, here is it for you.

The author Swami Prasannaatmaananda Saraswati is one of the senior

most disciples of the world-renowned His Holiness Pujya Swami

Chinmayanandaji. He hails from Andhra Pradesh and is the present

Senior Acharya (Spiritual teacher) of the Chinmaya Mission, Madras.

He took Sanyasa-Deeksha form H.H. Swami Tejomayananda on 29/08/94.

Formerly he was known as Brahmachari Prasanna Chaitanya. He is a

Post-Graduate in mathematics, and a scholar in Sanskrit. He has

mastered Paan'ini Sootras of Sanskrit Grammar, and Brahma-Sootras of

Vedanta.

The piece is divided into ten chapters, each Day being one chapter.

There is a Translation & Pronounciation Guide below. Thanks to my

colleague Ajay for typing in the book. Before that here ten phrases

that Uday Acharyaji translated for Sonia.

1. Good morning - Suprabhaatam.

2. Good night - Shubha Raatri.

3. Good bye - Punar Milanam Bhavatu.(Let

there be a reunion)

4. Have a nice day - Sudinam Astu Bhavate.

5. How are you? - Katham Asti Bhavaan/Bhavatee

(masculine/feminine).

6. Thank you - Dhanyavaadah.

7. You are welcome (in response to 'thank you') - OM.

8. My name is - Mama Naama .....

9. I love you - Tvaam Prati Preetim

Anubhavaami.(I experience love for you).

10. I am happy - Sukham Anubhavaami.

11. I am hungry - Kshudaam Anubhavaami.
