Guest guest
I have found this excellent article on Lalitopakhyanam which is the story of Sri Lalita Mahatripurasundari and her various avataras and their deeds. Please see: http://harsha16.topcities.com/lalitopakhyanam.htm It is said that even one repetition of this scripture is equal to 1000 repetitions of the Chandi...wow! Can Swami tell if this is one of those exagerrations that exist throughout the various scriptures' phalashrutis in order to impell the devotee to a particular practice? Indeed, if one is able to gain the fruit of 1000 Chandi recitations by one parayana of one scripture, this would indeed be a boon! Any thoughts on this matter is greatly appreciated. Guest guest
Jai Maa. Does that mean that if I chant the Lalitopakhyanam once, the Mother of the Universe will let me chant one thousand Chandi Paths! That is a great boon! I will get started right away. If you take one step towards God, She will take 1,000 steps towards you. Guest guest
Namaste, I appreciate Saradaji's sense of humor. But in response to the original post about how powerful Lalitopakhyanam is, we have to remember that without direct spiritual transmission, the power of the mantra is not unlocked as a sadhana. It doesn't matter what the scripture / tradition says. The only thing that matters in the case of sadhana is whether you have the blessings to practice it, otherwise you will simply be doing it as part of "your spiritual path," which is mostly a construction made by your own deluded mind. A person needs the grace of Sri Guru to guide you out of that "this is my own religion" attitude, that most of us take in the beginning. There is still positive effect from chanting the mantra with sincerity, requesting devotion and surrender. But the difference is that sadhana is given by the guru, and sadhana means, "the straight path to the goal." So first the grace comes in the form of a blessing to be able to chant. When you hear Sri Maa sing the mantra, for example, that blesses you to be able to chant it. But when you are instructed in the practice of the sadhana, you are empowered to realize it's fruits in "the straight path." The other path, one's own "path" is not the straight path. It's a mixture of our own karmic desires to interpret phenomenon, and have a good portion of it "turn out" the way we envision it for ourselves. I think what Sarada is saying here is, that a wise devotee does not have the attitude of a "spiritual consumer" toward mantra. But, that of a reverential and surrendered person, who feels so lucky to have even one blessed ishta mantra, that there does not arise this need to become a "seeker" of "mantric wisdom" outside of the ishta mantra /ishta guru / ishta deva relationship. Guest guest
Now that's the answer! - Sarada Monday, October 27, 2003 8:00 PM Re: 1 Lalitopakhyana = 1000 Chandi Recitations? Jai Maa. Guest guest
I don't know...is the answer obvious? Can you tell that I like shortcuts? :-) Surely there are no shortcuts to God/dess. However, since Swami-ji has translated "sadhus" as "the efficient ones" and tells us to follow their example, if it is true that 1 Lalitopakhyanam = 1000 Chandis, then this would indeed be more efficient. And since I am trying to be like a sadhu and be more efficient I guess this is why I asked the question. But somehow my intuition is telling me that however much faith you put into your sadhana is propotional to its benefits. I'm sure there is someone out there who can chant "OM" once and get the benefits of a million Lalitopakhyanas and a million Chandis, just by the strength of their faith. So may we have unshakeable, infinite faith in our practice! Thanks for letting me ramble. Jai Maa. Guest guest
I love your idea of chanting Om once with total faith. or Ram? or Om Namah Shivayah? Oh, yes. I truly believe this.
