Categories of Yantras

Namaste Aaron,

You had expressed an interest in yantras so I'll pass this on to you.

I'm sure Swami Vittalananda won't mind and it will save you from

wasting money on the wrong type of yantra.

 

"First you need to separate special purpose Yantras and those used

for Sadhana. This can be done by which type of metal. In general use

there are those made of copper and those made of silver and gold.

Gold yantras would be used by Kings and those who are desirous of

wealth. Silver is considered the most pure, and used for Sadhana. It

is the nature of copper to conduct efficiently and then burn out, one

should only "activate" them just before use and then discard just

after use. One would use a copper yantra in the cornerstone of a

building, or for Vaastu, for short-term remedy for a bad astrological

period. A silver yantra is used for Sadhana and spiritual progress.

Gold is used for material gain, but some use it for Sadhana as well."

By silver yantra, I'm sure sterling silver is what is meant.

Gold yantras are made of varying purity (14k, 18k, 22K, etc.) But

there are much more affordable Gold-plated yantras too.

 

I'm waiting for his answer about quartz/natural rock crystal

(sphatik) yantras, I'm pretty sure these can be used for Sadhana.

I've noticed some sites selling the cheaper man-made lead crystal

yantras, stay away from these -- not the same at all, even though

they are pretty and look similar.

 

If you wanted to concentrate your energies on one yantra, I would

recommend the Sri Yantra/Sri Chakra (same thing). It is considered

THE yantra of the Sri Vidya path, the most powerful yantra of all. It

brings both Bhukti & Mukti, material protection and spiritual

progress (if not liberation).
