Either Swami Rama or Pandit Tigunait wrote somewhere that in Vedic times (or maybe before) the Gayatri was used in many ways that are no longer known, or kept very secret. One of its uses was as a powerful weapon on the battlefield. But I always assumed it was the Savitri Gayatri.
