Autobiography in Five Short

Chapters

By Portia Nelson

II

walk down the street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I fall in.

I am lost…I am helpless

It isn’t my fault.

It takes forever to get out.

III walk

down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I pretend I don’t see it.

I fall in again.

I can’t believe I’m in the same place.

But it isn’t my fault.

It still takes a long time to get out.

IIII walk

down the same street.

There is a deep hole is the sidewalk.

I see it there.

I still fall in…it’s a habit.

My eyes are open.

I know where I am.

It is my fault.

I get out immediately.

IVI walk

down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I walk around it.

VI walk

down another street.

Brian,

I love the poem too - have had it around for sometime.

Vigilance is the name of the game. As long as I am alert I can avoid

the pitfalls or simply walk down another path.

Thanks for posting this. This is a modern proverb - it delivers the

truth in a few words.

Dear Brian,

I too have had this poem for a long time.

I think chapter three is such a milestone for us.

When we realize our habits--when we open our eyes--even though we

still fall, we know, and stop blaming others or the world, or even ourselves,

since we simply SEE, oh, this is me doing this over and over.

Moving through to chapter four is our heroic story.

Chapter five our soul's evolution.

It is very beautiful.

Thanks!

Nitya
