Guest guest
Here is a little quote from Swamiji, a thought to chew on: "I am not so concerned with what goes into your mouth as what comes out." Ramakrishna said, "Pure food gives rise to pure thoughts." Here at the Mandir we do not cook with garlic or onions as they tend to cause the mind to engage in more activity. So they are not the best for meditation purposes but that is not to discount garlic because it does have other healing properties. There is a substitute for garlic which we do use in cooking and that is asofaetida powder or hing. It can be purchased at any Indian grocery store. Most of us here are vegetarian and do not eat garlic, onions, or eggs. Shree Maa has never required anyone to abstain from any food (vegetarian or non vegetarian). Sometimes a person's body may have a need for a certain non-vegetarian food. I would have to agree with Nitya that fasting really helps to lighten the body and mind and makes meditation easier and deeper. especially fasting during a special event like Navaratri Think about how much time it takes to shop, prepare, cook, and clean up after a meal. When we fast we have alot more time for sadhana. For people who work a full work week Maa does not recommend fasting. The Master Cleanser is also a good drink to take when fasting as it provides energy and vitamins. I am reminded of a time in Maa life's w hen she was younger in India and she would automatically go into samadhi. During this time she only drank sandlewood water and ate tulsi leaf. What is the next step???? Breathtarian.
Guest guest
Food is the subject of Ayurved. There are different constitutions and different imbalances in those constitutions. Diets and activity and specific formulas are recommended to help balance the physiology. Another translation of SAMADHI is balanced intellect. It helps to have a balanced physiology of intellect to begin with in attaining samadhi through sadana. One ayurvedic remedy that I particularly enjoy is Brahmi powder. It is the most sattvic of all herbs. It stops the mind from chasing its tale/ opens the 7th chakra/ helps give the experience of Brahman. It is called meditation tea when boiled with milk for 15 minutes in the Himalayas. One can add a pinch of ginger, cardamon, a teaspoon of ghee as an anupan, and rose petal jam for flavor. Roses also help open the 4th chakra for bhakti. Guest guest
Actually I believe that Ginger is considered the most sattvic, but brahmi (a particular species of Gota Kola) is very nice as well. - James Eyerman Wednesday, December 17, 2003 7:47 AM RE: Re: What food is good for sadhana Food is the subject of Ayurved. Guest guest
Dear Mahamini: "Gotu Kola" is not same as "Brahmi" Gotu Kola - Centella asiatica (L) also known as Indian Pennywort, Water Navelwort and Hydrocotyle asiatica. Active principle is based on triterpenes and asiaticosides and Centellosides. Brahmi - Bicopa monneria and the active principle is Bacosides A and B.
