Guest guest
I was talking with a couple of friends from the Mandir last night. We wondered whether chanting another scripture instead of the Chandi would give the same benefits as the Chandi. After all, almost every scripture says that "reading this with one pointed concentration will give a man everything he needs" . I think this is where a Guru or inspiration comes into the picture. Sure , there are so many great scriptures, but what comes to you from your beloved Guru carries more power than all other scriptures. The Saptasati is just another scripture, but when it from a person who has made it his entire life and the person is important in your life, then it becomes YOUR Saptasati. For others, the Saptasati is still a great scripture, but does not have the personal relevance as the relationship is not there. It is like an "I love you". Beautiful words ... but ordinary until when heard from the lips of your beloved one. Then it REALLY speaks to your heart. Just my thoughts.. Guest guest
Hi, This is another really interesting topic. I think it's another of those that only really gets learned either through direct experience, or by actually sitting in the presence of the guru. It is true that there are many scriptures, and they almost all claim to bring enlightenment, health, wealth, etc., so, too, do many other kinds of practices. I have to agree with the previous post (I forget who it was) who said that each scripture has its own flavor, but what, I wonder, exactly is that flavor? Enlightenment, the recognition of the self as the self of all, is the same no matter the means employed to attain it. The flavor then must reside in the intricate beauty of all the levels of created life. The investigation, exploration, attainment and enjoyment of all the variety and nuance of flavor must be like discovering in your beloved, depths of complexity and beauty you never suspected. Guest guest
Hi Chris, IMO, ALL Hindu scriptures talk about the same points - Faith/ Surrender/ Discrimination/ Detachment/Right Action/ Renunciation. Only that they may be presented differently. I think that we are drawn not only to the teaching but most importantly to the teacher, and how (S)He goes about Her/His life . The Sadhana follows from the inspiration ... In fact in the Chandi , there is a sloka in the Kavacham that begins with Prathamam Sailaputri ca .... The first is the Inspiration, and from that all follows ... Your inspiration may be the text itself or the Guru that recites the text. In my case it is the teacher ... and now that I have practised his teaching, the inspiration has been lovingly superceded by the book itself ... Thanks for the discussion.
