Guest guest
"Saint" and "Sage" are English words, and in the pure context of the English vocabulary, here is what I feel the difference is. I could be wrong, but this is the way I think it is, and I am open to revising my concepts if someone else explains it better or correctly. Sage is used to describe a scholarly person, a well-read person whose understanding of life (or maybe an aspect of life or many aspects of life) is profound and deep.... They are also usually avuncular in nature.... some revered scientists can be called sages... obviously most of the rishis and swamis could be called sages. Saint belongs to the divine realm only. A lover of God, he is ecstatic in union with Him. He need not be a well-read person, nor need be aware of wordly needs and problems. To summarize, while most saints are usually sages, all sages are not necessarily saints, and all saints are not sages, and vice-versa! Hope the summary was not confusing. . Guest guest
Manoj, I tend to use the words interchangably, though I do think saint carries some heavy Catholic, Christian connotations, esp. surrounding siddhis or miracles. Personally, I don't think one can be a saint without also being a sage. A sage possesses pure knowledge and wisdom (at least the way I use the word), and that is not gotten from books, but from spiritual attainment.
