Salutation to the god SUN, who is the eyes of the world, the cause of the birth, sustenance and the death; the essence of the Vedas and three gunas and who is nothing but Brahma, Vishnu and Siva. The New year's day is over. You must have celebrated the New Year in a great style; wished people; renewed contacts with the forgotten and greeted everyone. New year's celebration is to keep faith in the future and hope for the good. People make resolution for the new year, wish their friends and relatives renewing the contacts. Let us wish that every one makes a resolution to PRACTICE YOGA THROUGH OUT THE YEAR AND INFLUENCE THE FRIENDS AND RELATIVES TOO TO DO THE SAME. New year's day is an occasion to remember the good things; to meet the dear and the near as well as others too. Meeting the people and eating together are the two GREATWAYS to live happily. The month of January is an active period for the people of Bharat (India). On 7th January, Pushya Pournima, full moon day, ANDHAKASURA VADHA, the destruction of the demon of ignorance was observed by worshiping Lord Siva, Mahakala. On 15th January this year, here in this Bharat people celebrate 'UTTARAYANA PUNYAKALA', the significance being the entering the house of Capricorn by the Sun. From this day onwards the Sun starts its northwrd movement. This being an auspicious day for the Hindus, millions of people go to the river near their place and take a holy dip. Some go to the sea for a special bath in the sea. This day is also known as Makara Sankranthi. Makara means Capricorn. Pongal, Bhogi, Suggi, Lohri are some others names of this festival day. For rural people, this is an important festival and they celebrate this day as the harvest day. Prayer to the Sun for the health and enlightenment by doing Surya namaskar is one of the rituals observed by the people.
