Steve,

A sankalpa is a resolve for an undertaking.

It may mean doing a puja everyday for a certain length of time.

Also in all of Swamis books, there is a sankalpa in the beginning

that says " I , *your name* , on this lunar day, at this location,

of this lineage, undertake to do this puja/homa for the satisfaction

of this deity *name of deity* " .

So a sankalpa means two things

1) a vow of worship or any spiritual practice for a certain number

of days or

2) before beginning the worship, a statement of purpose for

clarifying why I want to do the puja/homa on that occassion.

Hope that helps. Please dont hesitate to ask your questions.

cool, latha, thank you.

i am reading Shree Maa Life of a Saint and Before Becoming This ...

i was wondering what to read next, maybe Chandi Path, which is [i

think] the book Shree Maa took during her early sadhana. any opinion?

here is another question. if i was to take a sankalpa like that,

what lineage would i say i belong to? unless i belong to Shree Maa i

am a child without a home, or i am floating in god's limitless hands.

I would suggest "Sahib Sadhu". Also the Kasyap sutras in

"The Guru and the Goddess" .

Chandi - of course you can read it, but IMO , better chanted than

read . Maa says "The Chandi is my life". For most people,

including myself, chanting the entire book can be overwhelming at

first. Swami always asks us to start small and let the process

expand organically.

Take a few chapters that appeal to you. Here is what appealed to me

when I started out.

1) Siddha Kunjika Stotram. - If you hear Maa's chanting in Chandi

Path CD , you will understand why I fell in love with it

2) Tantroktam Devi Suktam - The "Ya devi sarva bhutesu" series -

Easy to chant because it is a repetition with only one word changed

between the stanzas. Plus, this song has been popularized in many

New Age CD collection. So it is easy to catch on.

3) The 32 names of Durga - 7 stanzas , with a good rhythm, a quick

fix for energy. When you practice often enough, you can chant within

2 minutes.

And you will find more ...

Here is what the Kilakam in the Chandi has to say about people

wanting to sing the glories of the Divine Mother.

"When the blessing of the Supreme Sovereign is welfare, health,

fulfilment, the destruction of all enmity, and the ultimate

liberation, why will men not sing her praise ? "

GO FOR IT STEVE ! VICTORY TO THE DIVINE MOTHER !

As for the lineage question, you would put in your Guru's parampara

as your lineage. I also have this out as a question to Swamiji, and

I will let you know.

The picture on the cover of "The Guru and the Goddess" is a drawing

based on the photo seen here at http://www.shreemaa.org/video2.htm

I once told Maa how much I loved that photo. She said the photo was

taken at a time when She was often in Samadhi.

Thank you for your questions and for the satsang. We are here to

help our practices grow and the best we can do is to share

information and also encourage and inspire each other.
