Guest guest
I have attended several fire ceremonies that Swamiji has led before . But the Rudri during Shivaratri was the first time for me after I turned a serious chanter ! As a "serious" chanter, by that I mean , one who chants everyday, I had developed my own pace, my own rhythm. So, I feel like I am in a swing on a playground. A gentle motion , back and forth and I feel pleasantly energized. Chanting with Swamiji was another matter though ! We started quietly enough, but by the time we were in the fifth chapter, I felt the heat. There was something happening to Swamiji - he was looking soooo focussed, ringing the bell with one hand, throwing rice into the fire with the next and turning pages, and chanting out several verses to a breath with a few moments in between to take a breath. I was yelling along with the group , there was no time to think or do anything else, except coordinate the turning of the page , throwing the rice in the fire and chant and chant and chant .... No time to think ! Only action ! Those glorious, precious moments ... I came out of the Rudri feeling like I had just come out of a roller- coaster ! A thrilling ride , with no time to think, and thoroughly shaken up ! THIS is chanting ! JAI SWAMIJI !

Guest guest
Steve, Yes absolutely - I have changed tactics now to try and chant as many verses as I can (consistently of course) to the breath. I am so caught up in trying to complete the chant that my mind doesnt have any time to wander. Moral of the story - push my limits to chant more verses to the breath. I chant the Chandi everyday. Guest guest
ah! what about short mantras, do you always say them fast, or as you please? om nama shivayam, for example. do you always have a set number of beads you are doing, or do you ever just sort of say it under your breath, but not fast? thanks for answering questions like this latha. steve , "Latha Nanda" <lathananda> wrote: > Steve, > > Yes absolutely - I have changed tactics now to try and chant as many > verses as I can (consistently of course) to the breath. Guest guest
Steve, The Pranayam works very well for all - a long text or short mantras . Typically, I take one deep breath and say "Om Namah Shivaya" for 10, 15 or 20 times, but I keep the count consistent for however many malas that I do. Let us say you are doing one mala (108) of Om Namah shivaya , and that you are able to 20 such mantras to one breath. So you finish five rounds - 1 breath , 20 mantras and that totals a 100. For the last eight - do not stop on the eighth , but continue until you finish 120. Swamiji says that 108 is just the minimum suggested, but to go and finish the round with the count of mantras per breath that you chose. There is also a question on our FAQ with a similar theme (qstn 2). I urge you to check out http://www.shreemaa.org/faq.htm Jai Maa Latha , "bingo_ridley" <bingo_ridley> wrote: > ah! > > what about short mantras, do you always say them fast, or as you > please? om nama shivayam, for example. do you always have a set > number of beads you are doing, or do you ever just sort of say it > under your breath, but not fast? > > thanks for answering questions like this latha. > > steve > > , "Latha Nanda" <lathananda> > wrote: > > Steve, > > > > Yes absolutely - I have changed tactics now to try and chant as > many > > verses as I can (consistently of course) to the breath.
