Guest guest
Namaste, I am trying to learn the Purusha Suktam and found that there are atleast 2 versions -- the one in the Rudri has 22 verses and the second line of the first verse is "sa bhumim sarva tasprtvaa". The one in the Advanced Shiva Puja has 16 verses only and the second like of the first verse is "sa bhumim vishvatovrtva". Moreover on the web, there is a Purusha suktam referring to Lord Narayana as the Purusha and has 24 shlokas. Are they derived from different sources? Are there several Purusha Suktams ? Thanks to anyone that can help. Latha
Guest guest
Dear Latha Nanda: Purusha Suukta is found in all of the four veada's. R^igveda 10.90 has 16 R^icaa. vaajasaneyii yajurveda araNyaka 31.1-22 and kaaNvayajuveda araNyaka 35.1-22 has 22 R^icaa. taittariiya yajurveda araNyaka has 18 R^icaa. shuklayajurvediiya suuktaa contains 18 R^ica with slight variations. saamaveda 6.4.3-7 contains only 5 R^icaa. atharvaveda 19.6.1-16 has 16 R^icaa. This suukta does not contain the popular "ya~javena ya~janamayajanta devaa ....." that is found in R^igveda and yajurveda, but ens with ... muurndho devasya bR^ihato a.nshavah sapta saptapii.. The conventional "ya~javena ya~janamayajanta devaa ....." appears in atharvaveda at 7.5.1. All of these variations have very important significance attached and needs to be understood, why our Sages might have thought of altering the order of various R^icaa and sometimes changing them entirely and/or adding additional R^icaa?!!! May be some day I will publish my thoughts on this subject matter, hopefully soon.
