Guest guest
In the "Siva Puja and Advanced Yajna" book the well-known verse that begins "om purnamadah purnamidam..." appears on page 431 and again on page 444. On page 431 the fifth word of the mantra is spelled "purnamuducyate", whereas on page 444 this word is spelled "purnamudacyate". This discrepancy appears in both the Devanagari script and the transliteration. From having heard this mantra spoken, I am thinking that perhaps the spelling given on page 431 is a mistake, whereas the spelling given on page 444 is correct. However, I am not certain about this and would like to know which is the correct spelling, or whether the spelling given on page 431 is perhaps an acceptable alternate spelling given intentionally for some reason. If someone could clarify this matter and resolve the discrepancy it would be much appreciated. Jai Maa, Dharmananda
Guest guest
Dear Dharmananda, I checked several other texts and they are all spelled like it is on page 444. "purnamudacyate". There might be a misspelling in the Sanskrit on page 431. I will ask Swamiji about this. Thank you for your keen observation. Guest guest
In the Cosmic Puja, the Napesvara Suprabhatam Stotram and the Durga Puja Beginner, the spelling is "purnamuducyate". Guest guest
However, in the end of the Kali Puja book, it is spelled "purnamudacyate". Personally, I pronounce it "purnamuducyate" since that is what I "heard" Swamiji say. Guest guest
Thank you Parvati and Ardis for your input on this question. I also checked a few other sources and found "purnamudacyate", but Ardis has found other examples of "purnamuducyate" also. So the mystery remains! I like to get these mantras "right", at least as best I can, so I would very much appreciate it if it is possible to ask Swamiji about this. Then we'll have an authoritative answer. Thank you. Guest guest
Here is what Swamiji has to say on the subject: "I think purnamudacyate is the correct one." Thanks for the correction." , "ma1973" <dharmananda@m...> wrote: > In the "Siva Puja and Advanced Yajna" book the well-known verse that > begins "om purnamadah purnamidam..." appears on page 431 and again on > page 444. Guest guest
Thank you very much for this. I'll make the correction in my book.
