Guest guest
"...Why 9 ? ie. Why do we celebrate for 9 days? What is the significance of the number 9 ?...Swamiji" Namaste, Swamiji, The number 9 is considered a "perfect number" because it is the root number of 3 magnified 3 times..so it is an increase of the original number of Perfection:3..because it is magnified 3 times it is even more significant (the most sacred number: Brahma, Vishnu,Shiva; Sarasvati, Lakshmi, Parvati; or Maha-Sarasvati, Maha- Lakshmi, Maha-Kali and more and more 3 relationships. Associated with the planet Jupiter: the guru planet). Nine is the last whole number before the compound numbers and signifies completion, perfection, wisdom, silence and space> 9 planets, 9 jewels of the 9 planets, 9 Durgas, 9 yoginis, 9 nights of Worship (Navaratri),9 levels of worship in the Sri chakra puja and more and more and more 9s. And, as mentioned, the 3 stages of evolution of a human being from Jiva to Shiva...and the 3 stages of the path. When we are worshipping Durga, she is representing the power of will or iccha shakti...the power to root out and destroy our destructive tendencies. When we focus on Mahalakshmi, she is representing the divine power of purposeful action in the world (kriya shakti) and the power to rise above our lower nature. Then we are worshipping Saraswati, the personification of divine knowledge and wisdom (jnana shakti). These three "powers" are held within Shiva at the beginning of time, before the formation of the world. And the "world" arises in these 3 "powers", the Divine Shaktis of Shiva. In a way, Navaratri could be seen as the coming forth of this Cosmic Energy from the limitless Void of Pure Mind...the entire creation coming forth: the 3's multiplying and multiplying into 9: Nava ratri. What an amazing thing to think about...that this, in a way, is like the absolute beginning of everything!!! a REAL New Year!! best regards, sadhvi
