Guest guest
Latha, Thank you for the kind thought! I missed you all! Yes I was kind of ill, with an emergency trip to the hospital included. I had the opportunity to chant the 32 names of Durga 11x Thursday morning, while passing a kidney stone ... Still at the hospital this morning, I did not have the names on the print-out at the alloted hour, so I chanted the Durga Mantra instead ... Peace! I am happy to be home! Guest guest
hi ardis the experience actually re-opened an inquiry of mine, regarding the ability to isolate awareness outside of, or below, any experience. in my case here, i was unable to do so, the pain was far too intense, so it occupied my entire frame of reference. i was however able to think of whatever i wanted [hanuman, shree maa, etc.,] but i was not able to reach an external location free from the pain from which to observe the pain. does this distinction make sense? it is something i am very interested in, as i believe it is essential to the total freedom of a human being ... not to avoid or not experience pain, but to be essentially beyond it. i hope i am making sense here. and also to distinguish between transcending pain as a process in which i am prepared [sticking a pin thourgh one's cheek for example as a stunt, i am not interested in that] ... it is more the actual unpredicted live experiences that "blow us away" ... how to be outside of all that, no longer buffeted by chaos, pain, etc. ... in a state of total calm, observing one's own pain and even death as if from a great distance ... isn't that an essential aspect of complete spiritual maturation? steve c. , Ardis Jackson <anandamama@e...> wrote: > Oh Steve, > I know that can be a very painful experience. Guest guest
Hi Steve, Freedom from pain can be acheived through hypnosis, but vairagya (non- attachment) can only be attained through spiritual discipline. They are linked, but vairagya is the higher. I recall the story of Gandhi having an operation without anesthetic. He simply asked the surgeon how long the operation would take so he would know when to return to normal consciousness. Guest guest
Hi Steve, This discussion reminds me of how the disciples of Sri Ramakrishna had different views about whether he felt pain during the last months of his life when his cancer had perforated his throat. It seemed as though sometimes he was in samadhi and didn't feel the pain and other times he was suffering. He himself said that the body felt the pain but that most of the time he did not. I think of women who practice natural childbirth. I know that I was able to focus on my breathing and on my third eye and felt my self to be above pain; but I could hear my voice yelling. It took a lot of concentration to stay above the pain. I hope that you are feeling better. I have been told that passing a kidney stone is one of the most acute pains. Guest guest
ardis, yes i am aware of those dialogues, and also, it was similar to when ramana cried out with his cancer, some of his devotees were questioning that. nisargadatta, he was also closely observed, he kept on giving darshan [including a lot of talking] with throat cancer. there was a time when i was doing a lot more meditation than i am doing now in which i might have been able to see the pain from some distance and not so up close and personal. this experience pulls me towards reviewing some of that material. it is oriented to the observation of thought and awareness itself ... in short, ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING ... arising from the source of awareness ... perhaps coinciding with contemplations such as "I Am," I am That, etc., intuitively reducing further and further, "I,Am," etc. Eventually the mind starts to feel like it is falling back into the sushumna into the heart, and once there, hangs out around the periphery of the little cave entrance to the heart, either too afraid or simply unable to enter completely. This locale of awareness is overflowing with bliss, and all nature of things can be seen to arise, including the formation of dreams, thoughts at all levels, one's own identity and root self-awareness, the waking up from sleep, the passage into sleep, etc. Any sort of activity can be going on, even speaking or moving. I was not able to process intellectual activity at the same time however, with this particular approach. I am not sure yet how this study relates to the Chandi Path yet. steve , Ardis Jackson <anandamama@e...> wrote: > Hi Steve, > This discussion reminds me of how the disciples of Sri Ramakrishna had > different views about whether he felt pain during the last months of his > life when his cancer had perforated his throat.
