get well soon,

YOUR ABILITY TO DEAL EFFECTIVELY WITH THE CHALLENGES IN YOUR LIFE IS

GREATLY ENHANCED BY YOUR AWARENESS AND BELIEF THAT YOU'RE NOT ALONE.

we are with you.

Hi Steve,This discussion reminds me of how the disciples of Sri

Ramakrishna had different views about whether he felt pain during the

last months of his life when his cancer had perforated his throat. It

seemed as though sometimes he was in samadhi and didn't feel the pain

and other times he was suffering. He himself said that the body felt

the pain but that most of the time he did not. I think of women who

practice natural childbirth. I know that I was able to focus on my

breathing and on my third eye and felt my self to be above pain; but

I could hear my voice yelling. It took a lot of concentration to

stay above the pain.I hope that you are feeling better. I have been

told that passing a kidney stone is one of the most acute pains.Ardis

Bingo !!!!

hi ardisthe experience actually re-opened an inquiry of mine,

regarding the ability to isolate awareness outside of, or below, any

experience. in my case here, i was unable to do so, the pain was far

too intense, so it occupied my entire frame of reference. i was

however able to think of whatever i wanted [hanuman, shree maa,

etc.,] but i was not able to reach an external location free from the

pain from which to observe the pain.does this distinction make sense?

it is something i am very interested in, as i believe it is essential

to the total freedom of a human being ... not to avoid or not

experience pain, but to be essentially beyond it. i hope i am making

sense here.and also to distinguish between transcending pain as a

process in which i am prepared [sticking a pin thourgh one's cheek

for example as a stunt, i am not interested in that] ... it is more

the actual unpredicted live experiences

that "blow us away" ... how to be outside of all that, no longer

buffeted by chaos, pain, etc. ... in a state of total calm, observing

one's own pain and even death as if from a great distance ... isn't

that an essential aspect of complete spiritual maturation?steve c.---
