Dear Swami Satyananda:

On The Subject of Rishi:

Question 1

It is stated that all Mantras have a Rishi. Please

could you let me know who is the Rishi of the Mantra

OM NAMAH SHIVAYA?

Question 2

Which Veda and Verse # is the following salutation

contained?

"Namah Shivaya Cha Shivataraya Cha."

Please read below.

The Concept of The Rishi

Rishi: Every Mantra has a Rishi. The Rishi sits on the

head. Rishi Nyasa is to worship the Rishi of the

mantra on our head so the Rishi will bless us with the

knowledge and Siddhi of the mantra.

The Rishis through their intuitive perception opened

themselves to the revelation of the mantras and were

able to recognize their own effectiveness as channels

for the flow of grace, knowledge and power from

supreme consciousness. The mantras were transmitted

from generation to generation, from Guru to disciples

and in this process the power of mantras were greatly

increased. The repetition billions of times by

countless devotees over the centuries has brought

about a vast reservoir of power which arguments the

inherent spiritual potency of the mantras.

It was originally revealed to a sage who achieved

self-realization through it and passed it on to

others. The Rishi sits on the head. Rishi Nyasa is to

worship the Rishi of the mantra on our head so the

Rishi will bless us with the knowledge and Siddhi of

the mantra.

Mantras were revealed to the ancient masters who

codified them in the scriptures and handed down from

guru to disciple in Sanskrit. Although it is customary

for the guru when giving initiation to accept

voluntary offerings or fruit, flowers, money but

selling of mantras is strictly against all spiritual

rules.

The core of the Vedas

The Holy Five Syllables Namah Shivaya is the heart of

Vedas. It is the core of the very famous chapter of

Vedas that stands in the middle of the Vedas - the

Shata Rudriyam or Rudra Suktam. This great mantra of

Veda Samhitâ while hailing the God as the Lord of

everything of the worlds, salutes the God as Namah

Shivaya Cha Shivataraya Cha.
