Guest guest
Hi, Well, I did the sankalpa yesterday, actually rather late last night, as my beloved wife made plans for us to drive to her brothers and pick up some things we have been meaning to get for months now. Anyway, I did the prana pratishtha and nyasas and then the japa, which went well, then did the first part of the Chandi, which seemed to go on forever. I'm just not very used to reading Sanskrit, though I find I'm improving quickly (I imagine that's Swamiji's influence). By the time I had finished my japa and the Kushandika, my knees and hips were so sore I couldn't concentrate anymore, so I had to apologize to Devi and change asanas (twice, actually, since my first attempt at a new asan resulted in the most awful cramp in one of my feet). I finally finished, through the Kavach, sitting on the bed. It was a good practice. Although longer than I would have chosen at that time of night (which is the benefit of sankalpa). I know it will only get better with time, as my mind gets used to the new routine, and Shakti wears a familiar path in my consciousness. I did my japa silently. One of the benefits of this is that it goes faster, of course, though there are others as well. But I have found that japa aloud has its own unique benefits, though it does take considerably more time. I'm thinking I may alternate between doing japa aloud and silently. It is a bit of a struggle, since the modes are so different, but it may be worth doing. One day silent, the next aloud. Hmmm. I wonder what Swamiji would think about this? All things considered, it was a good start, I think. I'm looking forward to the increasing experience, skill, and depth of relationship the summer will bring. Guest guest
chris, one of the things i noticed is, sadhana will go real slow if you are very fatigued, which you might have been after a long day and the kind of activites you had at night. in other words, if you are tired. this is my interpretation. then if you are refreshed, the same exact activities can be much more lively. there is a pronunciation guide [at the end of chandi path] that makes this much better. once you get sounds like "c" and the long and short "a's" etc., the chanting becomes more intriguing to mind and it is easier to stay with it. it definitely gets better. i have been doing the shiva puja for a little while, and just last night, i noticed the 3 page calisa seemed like it went by in a flash, whereaas earlier it was difficult. it is partly a matter of familiarity. best wishes on your sadhana, i am happy to have you as a dharma friend. steve , "Chris Kirner" <chriskirner1956> wrote: > Hi, > > Well, I did the sankalpa yesterday, actually rather late last night, > as my beloved wife made plans for us to drive to her brothers and > pick up some things we have been meaning to get for months now. > > Anyway, I did the prana pratishtha and nyasas and then the japa, > which went well, then did the first part of the Chandi, which seemed > to go on forever. Guest guest
Hari Om, I have found it very useful to "tune" the sacrum before chanting the Chandi, or anything else. Start with a very low Om and see if you can feel the sacrum vibrating--just imagine that it is. The sacrum is a set of fused verterae that fit inside the hip bones at the back, lower portion of the spine. Then see if you can feel the vibration of the Om in the legs--even though they are folded. Then move up along each chakra using the bija mantras no less than 16 times each until you reach 6th Chakra. There you repeat "So-ham", then let the awareness rise to the crown. I can't tell you how vauable this has been for me. It really has changed the whole sensation of chanting this sacred text, since it is the vibration of the sanskrit 9along with the intention) that does "it". I hope you find this useful. Root, at the base of spine or 1st chakra bij mantra is: LUM 2nd located near the root of the reproductive organs is: Vam 3rd located at or near the solar plexus is: Ram 4th located at heart center, slightly to the right is: Yam 5th located at the throat is: Hum 6th located at the third eye is: So-ham Namaste, Lynne - bingo_ridley Monday, April 05, 2004 8:04 PM Re: How's it going? chris, one of the things i noticed is, sadhana will go real slow if you are very fatigued, which you might have been after a long day and the kind of activites you had at night. in other words, if you are tired. this is my interpretation. then if you are refreshed, the same exact activities can be much more lively.there is a pronunciation guide [at the end of chandi path] that makes this much better. once you get sounds like "c" and the long and short "a's" etc., the chanting becomes more intriguing to mind and it is easier to stay with it.it definitely gets better. i have been doing the shiva puja for a little while, and just last night, i noticed the 3 page calisa seemed like it went by in a flash, whereaas earlier it was difficult. it is partly a matter of familiarity.best wishes on your sadhana, i am happy to have you as a dharma friend.steve--- In , "Chris Kirner" <chriskirner1956> wrote:> Hi,> > Well, I did the sankalpa yesterday, actually rather late last night, > as my beloved wife made plans for us to drive to her brothers and > pick up some things we have been meaning to get for months now.> > Anyway, I did the prana pratishtha and nyasas and then the japa, > which went well, then did the first part of the Chandi, which seemed > to go on forever. Guest guest
on the "how's it going?" question ... i am getting some "rhythm" to it now according to the meter, although i have to slow down at long words or clusters of consonants. i am sitting at times using the hero posture [full lotus] as that combines another practice to extend that asana 5 minutes per month. i hope to be getting a closer look at the sanskrit more as i go along, and put on the chandi cd and recite along soon, should be ready maybe tomorrow or the next day for that. the only problem i am seeing at the moment is, in the sankalpas, i am lost as to what is the bright or dark fortnight and the number of the day ... even though i have the green calendar from the restaurant, this artist-type has not figured it out yet. i used chris' idea for the counting malas with stones, it works great ... i am using these little stone carved skulls i have ... that is quite symbolic, i think. ok, that is my report! steve , Ardis Jackson <anandamama@e...> wrote: > Yes he has. Guest guest
Hi Steve, I am glad things are going so well. As for the green calendar, the left hand numbers are the Western calendar. The right hand numbers are the tithi or tithau. For the month of Chaitra, the days corresponding to March 21 to April 4 are tithi 1 (pratipad) to 15 (purnima) and are the bright fortnight (sukla pakshe). The moon is getting larger. Purnima is the Full Moon. Then, with April 5, the tithi start again with pratipad. This is the krishna pakshe (the dark fortnight when the moon is waning.) The day 15 is called amavasyam. bingo_ridley <sconnor Apr 7, 2004 8:40 AM t; .<BR> <BR> <BR> </tt> <br> <!-- |**|begin egp html banner|**| --> <table border=0 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=2> <tr bgcolor=#FFFFCC> <td align=center><font size="-1" color=#003399><b> Sponsor</b></font></td> </tr> <tr bgcolor=#FFFFFF> <td align=center width=470><table border=0 cellpadding=0 cellspacing=0> <tr> <td align=center><font face=arial size=-2></font><br><a href="http://rd./SIG=12cba3t5i/M=290828.4794622.5939935.1261774/D=egrou\ pweb/S=1705075991:HM/EXP=1081458656/A=1950450/R=0/SIG=124u9bhid/*http://ashnin.c\ om/clk/muryutaitakenattogyo?YH=4794622&yhad=1950450" alt=""><img src="http://us.a1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/a/qu/quinstreet/300x250_uofp_yellow_arrow\ s.gif" alt="click here" width="300" height="250" border="0"></a></td></tr></table> </td> </tr> <tr><td><img alt="" width=1 height=1 src="http://us.adserver./l?M=290828.4794622.5939935.1261774/D=egroupweb\ /S=:HM/A=1950450/rand=452200692"></td></tr> </table> <!-- |**|end egp html banner|**| --> <!-- |**|begin egp html banner|**| --> <br> <tt><hr width="500"> <b> Links</b><br> <ul> <li><br><a href="/">\ /</a><br> <li><br><a href="?subject=Un">Devi_M\ andir</a><br> <li><a href=""> Terms of Service</a>. </ul> </tt> </br> <!-- |**|end egp html banner|**| --> </body></html>

Guest guest
Steve, The full lotus is called padmasana. The hero is something else entirely. Sounds like you're doing very well with the chanting; wonderful! To get the tithis right you need to refer to Latha's earlier post on the tithis, in which she listed both the simple noun and the modification for each. It's a ways back. The tithis are the names of the days of the fortnights between each full and new moon, 1-15, in each thirty day cycle. On the calendar, find the month, then there are three colums. If you follow up near the top, you will see they are labled date, day, and tithi. Find the correct month again, then the current date and day, and there too, is the tithi number. Now compare it with Latha's list to get the correct word. It's easy! I have copied Latha's list of the tithis (since I don't know them yet) in the back of my Chandi Path. Oh, and sukla is a waning moon, while krishna is a waxing moon. Guest guest
Isn't it neat when things come together? I remember how excited I was when I got all the offering articles for the Shiva Puja. It was wonderful. Somehow it really makes a difference to do things correctly. Jai Maa! Guest guest
Hi Chris, Sorry, no. I have never been to Issaquah. The only times that I have been with Maa it was at the Devi Mandir in Martinez or the Devi Mandir in Napa. I have never toured with them.
