Pranayam Question

Dear Karen,

I can give a few reasons why the breath needs to be consistent

1) The Breath is the link between our external and internal worlds.

As is our breath , so are our thoughts. If the breath is regular and

controlled, so are our thoughts.

So when we are doing japa , we are trying to control all the possible

elements - keeping our spine straight, our bodies still, and the

breathing regular - all because we want to get the mind focussed on

or a set of words to get it to be still. If we interrupt any of the

above , the mind will not quieten down.

2) From my own experience - a few times, in my eagerness to chant

more, I experimented with my breathing and didnt do it

consistently . The results were very unpleasant - a feeling of

lightheadedness and ringing in the ear.

This is not 'normal' breathing . This is pranayam - where we measure

our intake and outflow. And the recommendation when chanting is to

keep the rhythm consistent for the correct results.

This is a very good question and I am hoping that others will add to

this too.
