Arati is usually referred as the waving of lights which consist of

placing an image of our chosen deity on the altar, and waving the

Arati lamp before it.

The waving of the lamp before the Deity can signify the following:

the offering of the light within (the soul) to the Supreme Being.

“Just then, Shiva stepped out of the pillar of light as the sound of

OM assaulted the skies. Vishnu and Brahma fell on their knees in

worship.”

begining, the universe was created. This has made a lot of people very

angry and been widely regarded as a bad move." -- Douglas Adams, The

-0000 Getting back to the Basics of Puja :-

DeepamThanks Sadhvi and Sanju for your inspiration and encouragement

respectively.I thought I would post a question on some of the

concepts that we supposedly "know" already and get everyone's input .

We'll give the post a coupla days to respond and move on to the next

one. I will compile all our answers into one for Swamiji and request

his response , which I will post when I hear back from him. Swamiji

is extremely busy now but has been kind enough to get back to us

within a few days... so I request your patience and understanding

..That being said, I thought I would take Sadhvi's question and start

with that .Question

:What is the significance of a light or deepam in a puja ? Why do we

light a lamp , and why do we offer lights during Arati ?Put your

introspection hats on , folks and come back and let us know.JAI
