Guest guest
Swamiji says : Definitely use the mala at the fire. But purify the mala every time you perform the Vidhih, whether or not you count on your fingers. Guest guest
Namaste Karen, We do pranayam at the fire too . I mentally keep track of the number of mantras I do to a breath - like 'one om namah shivaya svaha' , 'two om namah shivaya svaha' and so on - of course the numbers are counted mentally and the mantra is chanted aloud . I would like to know how others keep track. Here is a technique that I am thinking of doing but havent got around to as yet. Suppose I want to maintain say 10 "Om Namah Shivaya Svaha" , then tie a little piece of colored string after the tenth bead in the mala. So it would be easy to keep track if I want to focus on the mantra mentally instead of the count. Just an idea. Guest guest
Where there is a will there is usually a way. There are probably as many ways as there are individuals facing this challenge. A few weeks ago I was doing one mala of japa to 2 breaths. I gave thought to doing one mala of japa per breath. A week later I somehow developed the lung capacity to do one mala of 108 japa recitations per breath. This took some effort. I was determined. This might simplify things for me hereforward. As a byproduct this has enabled me to do more verses of Chandi per breath. , "Latha Nanda" <lathananda> wrote: > Namaste Karen, > > We do pranayam at the fire too . Guest guest
that's a pretty good idea. here is what i have been doing. i count with my left hand using the counting system that starts at the base of the middle finger, and counter-clockwise counts segments until you go full circle with the outer segments [up the pinky, the tips of the fingers, and back down the pointer and ends at the base of the index finger] ... i do 2x this for a count of 20 per exhalation. this same hand holds the mala in place with the base of the hand. the right hand pulls the rudrushka beads through one by one. when i complete a mala, i use brian's technique [i think it was his?] of moving one by one from a pile of ten pebbles to another pile. 10 malas are complete when all pebbles are moved. s , "Latha Nanda" <lathananda> wrote: > Namaste Karen, > > We do pranayam at the fire too . Guest guest
Latha, I'm uncertain about this, so you might want to ask Swamiji at some point, but in my japa there is a point where I stop counting the repititions to the breath. Counting the repititions with the breath is difficult, requiring good concentration. Because of that it deepens one-pointedness. But there is no getting around the fact that it is two things, the mantra and the number. After concentration has deepened to a certain point, it seems to me that one should drop the count and concentrate only on the mantra. The count can always be taken up again if concentration flags. I think that after some time practicing the mind kind of knows where the time to breathe is. Chris , "Latha Nanda" <lathananda> wrote: > Namaste Karen, > > We do pranayam at the fire too . Guest guest
Om Namah Shivaya. To do my 108 recitations, I tune my mantra chanting to a bhajan I like. . Usually the bhajan has a verse of 4 lines, which is sung twice (call- response). so, here is how I chant: Slow 1st set: 8 chants (each line is a chant; 4lines*2 = 8) 2nd set: 8 chants (repeat of the 1st set) Higher-tone 1st set: 8 chants 2nd set: 8 chants Do it 1 time to make 32 chants. Do it 2 more times to make 64 more chants, so 96 chants till now. Do a slow chant of 1st set to make it 104 chants. Do a half chant (use your creativity for this!) of 4 to make it a total of 108 chants! This way, I only count the sets I am doing, not the actual number of chants, and I chant my mantra rhythmically enough to make it a thrilling experience! You can try variations of this to suit your needs. Hope this helps! Jai Ma! , "Latha Nanda" <lathananda> wrote: > Namaste Karen, > > We do pranayam at the fire too .
