Guest guest
Namaste All, It has been such a quiet day in the group today ... hope it is an exception rather than the rule .... My thanks to my friend for providing this question. What is the significance of chanting or doing puja during sunrise and sunset ? Ponder on , dear group members .... Guest guest
Hi Latha and group, Some thoughts. "When the day breaks into night and the night breaks into day, one shoudl practise meditation". I think there are SO many references here: scriptural, esoteric, practical etc. Mainly the connection between the Cosmos and the human being as part of it seems to underlie it. Yoga is a science and part of that science is a way of finding the flow that connects the macrocosm (universe) with the microcosm (us, incarnated). Dharma is the flow and karma is the way we can establish contact. Our own rhythms are part of the larger rhythms. The cycle of light and dark is the basic cycle for all living things. With the Dawn comes a stirring of energy on the planet: everything is waking up (there is a beautiful Sri Vidya meditation to do with this...the awakening of of every sentient thing at Dawn). Then, according to some studies ,there is a huge surge of energy in the atmosphere a half hour befoe sunrise..this is the time when the body chemistry is set for living beings (Japanese scientests found a sudden and dramatic shift in the blood chemistry of people occuring withint 10 or 20 minutes of sunrise...the blood is thinned and filled with fresh chemicals...which gradually get depleted during the day and are restored again at the next sunrise!!). So rising before dawn makes alot of sense...AND what we are thinking about at that time. The infusion of new energy takes place around 10 minutes before sunrise, whether or not we are consciously prepared and awake!!!....(more infor. regarding this, if there is interest). Sanskrit sciptures call this morning time brahma mahurta or amrit bela..."the time of Brahma", pure Consciousness...Amrit bela means the time of the nectar of life. It's really interesting to think that, before the advent of electricity, most people all over the world rose with the sun as a matter of practice. And also amazing that scientists, once again, are just beginning to catch up to the wisdom of the Vedas. Also, I think, that there is a connection to what we studied in the Praise to the Night of Duality. The times of "transition" (sunrise and sunset) between to fixed states: Night and Day...are times when the "doorways" to other Lokas are more available. In many cultures, these threshold times are considered to be the most sacred, most holy and best time to do spiritual practice. It's an interesting thing to get up before dawn and experience the world before it "wakes up" to ordinary consciousness. The energy in the atmosphere is very present; everything seems "charged with Awareness"! Well...that's alot of info. crammed into one post, so I'll end here. sadhvi

Guest guest
Hi, At the times of Brahmamahurta and Sandhya the forces of night and day are in perfect balance, there is peace. In the jiva, this means that for a few minutes sushumna nadi is open, and greater depth and intensity of spiritual experience is possible. In the normal course of the day, we alternate between Ida and Pingala nadis, with each one becoming more or less active during the course of a cycle. Ida is lunar in nature, and promotes introspection, lethargy, intuition, artistic impulses, inactivity, etc. Pingala is solar in nature, promoting an outward-looking orientation, active, strong, object-seeking, willful, etc. Neither set of faculties is conducive to pure meditation. The willful activation of sushumna is difficult. It requires considerable time and practice. Even when we think the breath is equal between the nostrils, it is often subtly dominant in one, or rapidly vacillating between the two, with only brief periods of sushumna opening. At the times of twilight, when sushumna opens naturally, we can more easily achieve levels of quiescent attention that in turn open the door for further advances. We can advance in our practice more quickly. With sushumna open, there is balance between the sun and the moon. There is balance within. We can sit without feeling the desire to rise and do. We can focus attention with a clear mind and an intensity of will, full of effortless effort. We can bask in the subtle current of blissful peace that always flows there.
