Guest guest
Namaste all, Since we are focusing on the MahaMrityunjaya mantra and the Chandi this story seemed to be relevant. Markandeya's father, named Mrikund Muni, did tremendous austerities to bring a son into the world. After some time Shiva appeared to him and asked him what boon he wanted. He told Shiva that he wanted a son. Shiva told him, "You can have a foolish son with a long life or you can have a very intelligent son but he will die at an early age." Mrikund Muni said, "I'll take the intelligent son." So Markandeya was born as the son to Mrikund Muni and he grew up as a lover of Lord Shiva. Mrikund Muni gave his son alot of knowledge and taught him how to perform tapasya. When Markandeya reached 16 years of age, Mrikund Muni became very sad because he knew that his son would die. So he decided that he didn't want to l ive in the world and he tried to take his own life. Just then Narad Muni appeared and asked him why he was trying to take his own life. Mrikund Muni explained that he was very sad that his son was going to die." When Markandeya heard this he said, "It is okay. This body is made up of the five elements and it is not eternal. Why is my dad sad? He has so much knowledge." Then he asked his dad why he was crying for him. His dad said, "I will not be able to see you anymore." Narad Muni told Markandeya, "You do austerities for Shiva and Shiva will give you blessings. Shiva brought you here and Shiva will take you from here." Markandeya started to worship Shiva everyday 24 hours a day. he was constantly reciting the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra, the mantra which gives victory over death. At the appointed time, Yama, the God of Death came to take Markandeya but Markandeya was completely absorbed in Samadhi. That time Shiva appeared and told Yama, "You cannot take him. He is praying to me with devotion. He is totally surrendered." Yama said, "But it is my duty to take him. What will I do?" Shiva said, "No. You cannot take him. I have to take him." Just then the Divine Mother appeared and said to Yama, "You cannot take him. I will give him a boon." That time the Divine Mother gave him the boon, "You will write about me and that knowledge human beings will receive. They will understand how they can be united with me. When they will know me, they will be with me all of the time." Thus Markandeya wrote the Chandi. Shree Maa says that the Chandi is our life. If we study it, listen to it and chant it then our divine perception will arise that we are HER.

Guest guest
Parvati, thanks for telling this story ... this explains so much about the inception of the Chandi Path I did not fully understand ... and the connection with that mantra. Guest guest
Thank you so much. I always wanted to know more about Markandeya. Parvati, is it possible for you to provide us with a translation of the Maha Mrtyunjaya Mantra from Shree Maa and Swamiji? I would like to know what I am chanting in Their words. Guest guest
Thank you so much, Steve. This is not only a different translation than the one from Lynne, the pronunciation differs from the others supplied. It may be a small matter, but it makes a big difference to me to get things straight from Shree Maa and Swamiji.
