Guest guest
Ekadashi literally means one plus ten, equallng the number eleven. Following the lunar calendar observed by Hindus, Ekadashi refers to the eleventh day of the lunar fortnight, the bright and the dark. Therefore, in one lunar month, two Ekadashi will be observed. While we are aware that the moon influences the tides, according to Hindu scriptures, it likewise affects the moods of man by having an influence on the chakras, or centers of energy in the human body. It is believed that Ekadashi falling on the bright fortnight, the mind 'finds abode' in the Ajna Chakra or Eyebrow Center, while on the dark fortnight, the mind is more easily concentrated in the Anahata Chakra or Heart Center. Generally, fasting is performed so as to make the mind more conducive to meditation and other spiritual practice. Fasting may be complete, no water or food, or partial, abstinence from grains and pulses.
