Namaste All - especially for those that do Beginner Shiva or

Beginner Durga Pujas.

Ever felt like the preparation for the puja took longer than the

actual puja ? Especially after we take so much effort into getting

all the offerings ready and they are just offered with an

"Om Namah Shivaya ...... samarpayaami"

Here is a small way to increase the duration of the offerings ...

I took this example from the Advanced Shiva Puja book and urge you

to refer to it for the other offerings.

When offer a milk bath to the deities, in the Beginner version we

just say

"Om Namah Shivaya payah snaanam samarpayami"

In the Advanced book , pg 103 it says

"Om Kamadhenu sadmudbhuutam

Sarveshaam jiivanam param

paavanam yajna hetusca

snaanaartham pratigrhyataam

Om namah Shivaya payah snaanam samarpayami"

which is filled with meaning - it says "For the motive of purifying

or sanctifying this holy union, we request you to accept this bath "

So the next time we pour milk on the deity, let us remember that it

is for purifying our union with God. Of course if you were doing the

offering to Durga, you would just replace the "Om Namah Shivaya"

above with "Om Hrim Shrim Dum Durgayai Namah"

There are similar such meanings for all the offerings. I request you

to refer to the Advanced Shiva book for details. The book is available at

http://www.shreemaa.org/bookstore.htm

latha i have a question maybe you or parv might want to address as i

am fairly certain others must be facing the same thing.

ok so i am starting to recite the chandi seed version only up to what

we are studying online on a daily basis. i was inspired by devnath

and wanted to get started. this takes more time than doing the shiva

puja, but i swapped the daily puja for daily chandi anyway, only due

to the issue of available time.

what do you think? i don't want to let go of doing the puja, and

actually wanted to go on to the advanced/cosmic, but am very much for

the chandi too. maybe chandi every day and puja 1x per week?

Hello fellow pujaris. I have a very basic question for you. What

does one do with all of the materials used for the shiva puja, or

whatever puja is being done (ie milk, honey, water, sindur, chandan

etc. that has been poured on the lingam). I have seen my mom drink

it, but if one does not want to drink it, then what? I use brasso

and other chemicals to clean my brass to make it shiny, so I am not

sure that I want to eat off of the dishes. Also, I am not quite sure

what metal alloys may be in the dishes and if I am pregnant, I

don’t want to be ingesting anything I shouldn’t. I

suppose I could use glass dishes, but I have only seen the use of

metal or brass dishes in mandirs.

Also, can any bhog be given or is there a specific food that we should give?

Thanks for the advice.

Namaste Steve,

I would say that it depends on how much time you are able to

allocate for your practices .... short answer is we need both in a

day.

If you can set aside 1 hr (say ) every day, then my suggestion would

be to get a full puja completed within 30 mins, and spend the

remaining 30 mins on one or two chapters of Chandi depending on what

you can fit in.

Here is how I am trying to work on my sadhana ....

This is the prescription that Maa had given me - meditation in the

early morning, puja in the morning and chanting (Chandi etc) in the

evenings.

I broke the early morning meditation a long time ago , Chandi in the

evening is limping along, but the morning puja has been very

consistent.

I think the puja works for me because I have had this habit of

prostrating before the family altar right after my bath in the

mornings. I just have to sit down and rattle off from the puja book -

and substitute for mental offerings when I didnt have the energy

for the actual offerings ....

The Chandi in the evenings and the early morning meditations are not

established practices as yet and so there is a lot of struggle going

on to create and sustain them , but I have no doubt that I will

succeed.

I am happy that I have stuck with my puja because I get the feeling

of accomplishment of having completed a full puja within 15 mins in

the morning... I am just doing the beginner ...so ...

Jai Maa and do let me know how you plan to work it out.

I just realized after typing out all this - you have to go by what Maa has

suggested for you as sadhana. Ask HER !

forum.

i agree the chandi is uphill. then again the shiva puja was too at

one time, and now it goes by kind of sweetly if that is a good word

to describe it.
