My own humble opinion is that ... writing down my understanding of what 'spiritual' meant helped resolve my own doubts. Now I KNOW what I mean when I say I am spiritual or NOT spiritual - I KNOW what to look for inside myself as the yardstick to determine if I am looking in the right direction. So I would love to go deeper into the mode of defining concepts - taking something and making it my own , so that I , in this duality , know what I am looking for. Swamiji has always talked about the importance of setting goals. So here is my question to the group What is a good spiritual goal to have ? Lets put on our introspection hats .... Guest guest
My goal is to experience divinity through every action and inaction, in every up and every down, through the love and the hate, the anger and the peace, to experience divinity beyond conception of duality beyond the guise of the mind and the trickery of senses. I spent so much time trying to prepare for goddess that I didn't realize I didn't need to. She was here all along. Brian "In the begining, the universe was created. Guest guest
Dear All, I feel - we need to practise a self less life , and do our duties with out any expectations (both in personal life and religious life.) there are over 1 lakh mantras in the vedas., of which 75% talks about purifiction of self and attaining divine nature. The life is so short for doing a gnana yoga or Raja yoga. Karma yoga is such a strict discipline that its slightly difficult to follow. the best way in this kali uga is Bakthi yoga - having bakthi on our GURU, which will help us get the bakthi & blessings of the God. he knows our past, present and future. Guru has the powers of God, but only the Guru can act as a Step down transfromer - who reduces the Voltage of power supply according to his deciples' capacity and requirement and enlightens his disciple. So lets be a faithful disciple. rest the Guru will take care. Lets develop universal brother hood. lets keep ourself insulated from pride, anger and jealousy. ( As the Maha Mrithyunjaya mantra says - we will lead a life of detached attachement - like the ripe pumpkin), and follow the footsteps of teh guru. Lets do our Nithya Karma with the fullest concentration and with out any expectations. Lets see success and failure equally. lets be devoted , rest - Guru kripa will take care of us. Conclusion : 1. Guru Bakthi. 2. Doing duties with out expectations. Guest guest
here is an example of a spiritual goal i worked with: "do not become angry." 99% of people in the west say that is not healthy you should express it. never mind re: that argument. it was a goal, but it was really more of a restraint. but it was confirmed as absolute, in other words, it covered all conditions, and the temporal setting was NOW [no due date, etc.] this is not necessarily the kind of goal/sadhana swamiji talks of, but it is one i had experience with. it remains a goal, because although i no longer get angry the way i used to, it is still a potential for sabotaging unity. anyway, this is the way i see it, it is a form of modifying the experience of existence in favor of unity and peace and greater awareness vs. emotionalism and ego and diminished capacity of a narrow relational field. steve , "Latha Nanda" <lathananda> wrote: > Sadhvi wrote "this is just becoming a PATTERN now! Guest guest
Thanks so much, Aravind. That is a wonderful description of the need for bakti and for relying on the Guru. aravind maharajan <aravindmaharaj > Wed, 2 Jun 2004 21:48:59 +0100 (BST) Re: Defining our goals Dear All, I feel - we need to practise a self less life , and do our duties with out any expectations (both in personal life and religious life.) there are over 1 lakh mantras in the vedas., of which 75% talks about purifiction of self and attaining divine nature. Guest guest
My thanks to Brian, Aravind, Sadhvi, Stevie, Swamiji, Chris for their valuable ideas. Here is a recap of what you said. "My goal is to experience divinity through every action and inaction, in every up and every down, through the love and the hate, the anger and the peace, to experience divinity beyond conception of duality beyond the guise of the mind and the trickery of senses." - Brian "1. Guru Bakthi. 2. Doing duties with out expectations. " - Aravind "non-separation". - My goal is to learn how to live my life in this state...all the time. - Sadhvi "do not become angry."- .....it remains a goal - Steve "To love God with all your heart and all your soul, and to love your neighbor as yourself. " - Swamiji "Samadhi" - Chris ----------------------- Hmm , I kept trying to come up with my goal over and over, and I realized that I want exactly what Swamiji has mentioned . What do I want ? I want to have a loving relationship to God and I want to that relationship to spill over on my day to day life . How do I go about it ? I will cultivate that relationship by spending quality time by doing sadhana. I will organize my life so that I can focus more on sadhana. -----------------------
