Guest guest
Does anyone (Kanna Krishnan-ji ? )know the difference between Chamunda and Dakshina Kali ? Are there more forms of Kali ? I always thought there was ONE Kali - any input from anyone is appreciated before I pass the question to Swamiji. Thanks and Jai Maa Latha

Kali is called Chamunda because She beheaded Chanda and Munda. Dakshina Kali is one of the many forms of Kali. The following are other forms of Kali worshipped in Bengal, Kerala and Mithila(UP?) 1)GuhyaKali 2)HamsaKali 3)Smashana kali 4)Dakshina Kali 5)Guhya Smashana Kali In Tantraloka, Abhinavagupta(Kashmira Shaiva scholar) is known to have talked about the following forms of Kali. 1)Sristhi Kali 2)Sthiti Kali 3)Raktakali 4)Mrityu Kali 5)Chandogra Kali 6)Kalasankarshini Kali. BhadraKali and Kamakala Kali is popular too. There might be many more. Best thing to do is to stick to that form/mantra of Kali one's Guru initiates the sadhaka into. Dakshina Kali seems to be more popular. She is called Dakshina Kalika because She is adept at granting her upasakas moksha. > > Thanks and Jai Maa > Latha
Guest guest
Namste Lathaji, There is one Kali and but represented by different image of Her. Did I sound confusing............... In Gospel of Ramakrishna ( Ramakrishna Math publication) Bhagawan mentions few image of Kali worshiped by the people of Bengal .Sarada Ma was said to worship image of Smashan Kali herself. There is reference in Kali Odiyya by Amarananda Bhaivaran to Bhadra Kali as their Kula Devata .Dasa Vidya Mahakali is the 10 head image that is ever present in Devi Mandir Cosmic altar . Dakshina Kali is the four armed Kali image mentioned first stated in Tantra Sara of Krishnananda Agamavimsa and later gained prominence in Nirutara Tantra and other Kali related text. You can obtain her dhyana mantra from Kali Puja book by Swamiji. Chamunda Kali image seems to wear tiger skin and hold staff in Her hand according to Chandi Path and She was named Chamunda upon kiling Chanda and Munda .You can learn about this from Chandi Path by Swamji as well. This seems to be different from Dakshina Kali image which holds sword on her hand while the other hand is showing abhya mudra The description of the image is usually reflected on the meditation precribing her . For example Dakshina Kali dhyana in Swamiji's Kali Puja book reflects Her image as well as Mahakali dhyana in Chandi Path reflects the image on the Cosmic Altar at Devi Mandir . In Chandi Path Swamiji further shared the Modified Secret and The Most Preeminent Secret that further describes the all image representation on Devi Mandir Cosmic Altar. For me Swamiji is not only a great devotee but also a meticolous scholar none is left to chance and everything he does has a significance and I loved him for that ............................. Remember Chandi Ma is one and also repesented by many as Swamiji states , sa devi navakoti murtisahita mam patu visvesvari may the Goddess who is represented by ninety million divine images ,remain close and protect me Jai Maa!!Latha Nanda <lathananda > wrote: Does anyone (Kanna Krishnan-ji ? )know the difference between Chamunda and Dakshina Kali ?Are there more forms of Kali ?
