Dear Beloved Sangha,

Can anyone out there share what is was like to choose your Ishta

Devata? How did you go about doing this? Also, for Karen cha Mike:

what was the process of "breathing life" into the statue of Laksmi?

Can you share your experience?

Thank you! Jai Maa!!!!! Jai Laksmi!!!!

Love and more love, Lynne

Namaste,

For me finding both my Guru and my Ishta Devata were spontaneous inner

love and recognition. This has not changed over time. The Guru Gita

verse "The Guru is Brahma, the Guru is Vishnu, the Guru is Lord

Mahesvara" has personal relevance in that my prayers to the Divine

brought a messenger who led me to my Guru, and my Guru led me to

India and my Ishta Devata.

Love to our Sangha,

Kanda

IMHO, whatever form of the Divine brings a spontaneous feeling of true

Love and Joy to Your Heart is the one you should go with. For me, it

was my Guru.

Dear YogaLynne,

I'll tell you a little story about "choosing" an Ishta Devata:

From the time I heard of the Ishta Devata, I wanted to

know...."who is MY Ishta Devata". I asked all around. People

said, "it's the one you are most drawn to, the deity who speaks to

your heart". "Hmm", I thought, "well, then, it must be my Mula

Guru...because He speaks to my heart most clearly"...but, still,

there was this thought..."who is my Ishta Devata?". I went to my

Vedic astrologer and asked, "who is my Ishta Devata, according to my

chart?". "Well, it could be Durga Ma or it could be Ganesha, either

one", he said. Still, although I loved both, it didn't sit so

comfortably with me that I felt contented. In 1999, after I came

back from the Maha Kumbha Mela, Lord Hanuman literally LEAPT into my

heart. I had not been particularly drawn to him; I was not trying

to "figure out" if he was "it" or not....he just suddenly appeared

in my heart and, without question, I knew, "He is my Ishta Devata".

And, really, it makes no "sense" in terms of the practices that I do

and it makes no "sense" in terms of the tradition I came from...but,

like true love, it is not about "making sense" to the mind or

figuring out how to choose. My experience is that your Ishta Devata

chooses YOU. Once you sincerely ask the question..."who is MY Ishta

Devata?", you open the door to that one who is already quietly

living in your heart to make himself or herself known to the mind".

It's a wonderful journey! best luck to you.

Um dia meu marido chegou em casa com aquele livro vermelho, em cuja

capa estava escrito Evangelho de Sri Ramakrsna e em baixo havia um

retrato do mestre.

Jaya Thakur Sri Ramakrsna Deva!!!! I offer my humble reverence in your

sacred lotus feet. yogalynne <omgirl (AT) patmedia (DOT) net> wrote:

Namaste all,

Here is a translation to Kalachandra's story:

One day mu husband arrived home with that red bookon the cover of

which was written "The Gospel of Ramakrishna" and had a picture of

the Master. I thought to myself: I'm not going to read this book.

I was iniciated into the Hare Krishna movement and I shouldn't read

other things. But the book kept calling me....I would look at it,

open it and close it right away saying, "I will not read you." It

didn't matter. Until one day some force made me open it and read

it....it was wonderful!!! I couldn't stop reading; it was as if I

were there....Immediately I put a picture of Thakur on the altar

next to Krishna and knew They were One.

Jai Ramakrishna!

Jai Kalachandra for your beautiful devotion!
