Guest guest
Namaste all, Here is a little story that one devotee from India shared with me the other day about belief. Once there was a boatman who ferried people across the river. And everyday there was one Brahmin priest who crossed the river but the boatman would not take any money from him because he was a Brahmin priest. The boatman always asked the Brahmin,"Please give me a mantra because I want to do japa to get Mother Durga's darshan." But the Brahmin would always say "Tomorrow. I will give you one." One day the boatman prayed to the priest to give him a mantra and the priest told him, "Say 10 hands, 10 hands." The boatman believed this japa and began to repeat 10 hands, 10 hands continuously. After some time the boatman saw Durga in front of him and he was very happy to get Her darshan. He bowed to Durga, she blessed him and then she went away. The next day the boatman said to the priest, "Guru, you gave me a mantra. I did japa of 10 hands and I got darshan of Ma Durga." The priest didn't believe the boatman and questioned him. He asked him, "Can you show me Ma Durga?" The boatman said, "Yes." So the boatman sat down and started doing japa of 10 hands, 10 hands. When Ma Durga appeared the priest could not see Her so the boatman asked Durga, "Why can't this Brahmin priest see you?" Durga said, "He is full of pride and dishonest. He did not give you a real mantra. He can't see me unless he touches your shoulder."" So the boatman asked the priest, "Why did you give me japa of 10 hands? The Brahmin said, "Your bamboo stick which you use to paddle the boat across the river is 10 hands in length and that is why I said do japa of 10 hands." The boatman said, "When you said 10 hands I thought you meant Durga because Durga has 10 hands." Ultimately the Brahmin priest put his hand on the boatman's shoulder and got the darshan of Ma Durga. There is no "magic" about any one mantra as long as you are sincere and fully attentive to the Divine. She sees into our hearts and knows us better than we know ourselves. "Truth is One, Paths are Many"-- Sri Swami Satchidananda. there is more, but those are the main things that came to me. Guest guest
Dear Steve, You keep asking for Maa to "stop by the forum." I understand that you would enjoy having some direct words from her, but please understand that this forum is very truly her loving presence, her own nurturing for you very directly and personally. Whenever you tap into this I hope you can come to know she is with you - not so much an intellectual knowing as a radiant light in your heart. Just look at what she shares with us here in this forum. Wow! Thank you for the richness that continues to pour forth through you. Jai Maa. Jayadeva
