>>>In MahaChandi, the descriptive Praise of the Goddess Chapter 3,

the moon is situated in a "jeweled crown". In Chapters 4 to ten we

see mention of a digit or half moon but after the shield bearing a

hundred moons was cut by Mother's sharp sword (chap 10) the Moon

then became Mother's crown.

Can anyone explain the significance of the moon in this context

since most of the dieties are depicted with a digit of the moon?

Pranams.

Dear Kali,

I have been thinking about this for a while. Some ideas: In the

Purusha Suktam, the world comes into existence from the body parts

of the Cosmic Person..."the moon from his mind"..and "moon, mind in

his heart", so it would make sense that the Supreme Lord Of Thoughts

would bear a shield with 100 moons.

The other thought is the 16 digits of the moon (or Kalas) are

taken from the cycle of the moon which waxes, wanes, disappears and

is reborn...like the bright half of the month when the moon apears

to evolve gradually in fractions until its 15 parts vanish into the

whole or full moon. Each digit of the moon is the realm of a very

specific Shakti or form of the Devi. I imagine this is what is being

referred to . You can research this information abut the Indian

concept of Cosmic Time, if it is really interesting to you...explore

the Nitya Shaktis. One of the most important parts of Sri Chakra

puja concerns the nitya shaktis.

i hope this is helpful.

best regards,

sadhvi
