Guest guest
Dear All, Pranayam - the second way of purification of the mind according to Hazrat Inayat Khan. Of course , Swamiji has already said that all the steps of yoga purify the mind, and if we remember Pranayam is the 4th step of yoga. Here is what Hazrat Inayat Khan says "The second way of purifying the mind is by way of breathing. It is very interesting for an Eastern person to see how sometimes in the West, in their inventions, people unconsciously apply the principles of the mystical realms. They have got a machine that sweeps carpets while sucking up the dust. This is the same system inside out. The proper way of breathing sucks up the dust from the mind and ejects it. The scientist goes so far as to say that a person exhales carbon dioxide. = The bad gases are thrown out of the body by exhaling. The mystic goes further, saying it is not only from the body, but from the mind also. If one knew how to remove impurities, one could remove more than one would imagine. Impurities from the mind can be thrown out by the right way of breathing. That is why mystics combine breathing with posture. Posture helps the stilling of mind, breathing helps the cleansing of mind. These two go together." Swamiji asks us to adopt both Pranayam and proper posture as part of our all our chanting - thus (unknowingly) so far I have been purifying myself just simply by Chanting the Chandi. The pranayam is very simple - Inhale for one length of the Navarna Mantra and exhale one or more verses of the Chandi. Jai Maa Latha
Guest guest
A friend of mine went to hear and see Hazrat Inayat Khan. After the lecture, my friend exited the hall from the back of the room and Inayat Khan exited from the front of the hall. They ended up face to face in a narrow hallway. My friend thought "he doesn't look so special." Just then Hazrat Inayat Khan's head turned into a huge elephant head like Ganesh. Then it flowed back into his physical head and he laughed. Guest guest
Dear all, Our body is also like an Internal Combustion Engine. We inhale and exhale 72,000 times a day.So assuming at that rate of breathing, we are supposed to live for 120 years (if we dont contract any major ailments). when a person crosses 60 years, he is considered as crossed half way through and functions are held at home at every incremental 10th age advancement.(60th age, 70th, 80th...100th ) In our car, when we fine tune the gaoline engine and the carburator, we are allowing the exact stoichiometry of air and fuel to mix, and we get a good mielage. similarly, by pranayama, we control the length of the breath.after practising for 6 months, our body and mind gets purified. we feel light, become lustourous, eyes become sharp, mind becomes stable.thus our body gets purified. the another beauty of this pranayama is - we breathe in and out conciously. we inhale and exhale Pranava mantra or our favourite bija mantra. this constant conscious thoughts about God keeps our mind clean. the mantra japa we do conciously clears our karma. karma of this birth and karma of previous births. God cannot change our karma. but a Guru has the power to change the course of the karmic effect in our life.that is the beauty and power of Guru and Guru bakthi. So a pranayama, with chanting of a bija mantra of our ishta devata and our Guru can purify our 1. Body (by taking long and controlled breathe all the organs and organels are getting the sufficient and ample oxygen energised by mantra), 2.Mind (gets purified by ishwara chinta) 3.Soul (gets liberated from the negative karmas due to the purifying powers of the mantra japa). As we get advanced in Pranayama, and move into Raja Yoga, we advance towards Godliness .As our 3 nadis ( idakalai, Pingalai and sushumna ) gets in resonace to the mantra japa, it awakens the kundalini energy from the muladhara, and advances up like a serpant and reaches sahasrara. Our lower end thoughts gets purified and the jivathma unites with the paramathma. But reaching this advanced level is difficult unless otherwise, we are under the direct guidance of Guru in person. Till we get the Guru Kripa, lets practice Pranayama to keep our body and mind clean. If we breath faster then the life expectancy comes down. coming back to the anology of an Internal Combustion engine with our body, ( excess fuel results in lower mielage. excess air in the carburator reduces fuel efficiency and REDUCES ENGINE LIFE.) so lets breath conciously, slowly and steadily. May Guru kripa kadaksham be with us all. Thanks to Lathaji and the beloved family for bringing this lively topic for discussion and brainstorming. Thanks and regards, Jai Maa, aravind. --- Ardis Jackson <anandamama wrote: > A friend of mine went to hear and see Hazrat Inayat > Khan. Guest guest
Dear Aravind and family, That is great info and encouragement to develop a pranayama practice. Thanks. Here is a website where you can freely either read or download wonderful books on yoga. It is Master Sivananda Saraswati's Divine Life Sociesty site. And there is one of Master Sivananda's books called "Science of Prananyama." wow! Many other great books there: "Thought Power,Kundalini Yoga," and tons more. It is a useful resource. You may enjoy visiting: http://sivanandadlshq.org/download/download.htm. love and blessings, Jayadeva
