Hi,

Unfortunately, none of these are as Maa practices it.

Ok...since no one else has said, I will try to describe it, though I

am only doing so from the image in the Shiva Puja and Advanced Yajna

(I cannot see whether the ring and little fingers are intertwined or not).

So, here goes....Yoni Mudra...

Hands together, palms touching.

Interlace the fingers.

Extend the middle fingers, pointing, together (like a church steeple).

Wrap index fingers around behind the middle fingers, and join, tip to tip.

The thumbs are already together because of the position of the hands,

just bend them at the outer joint so that they point straight down,

through the space between the palms.

The resulting position resembles a yoni.

Hi Chris,

That's what it looked like to me also. But I don't see how I can wrap

my index fingers around behind the middle fingers without breaking

them first and then gluing them in place. Maybe like so many things

it just takes some practice everyday to get the fingers more supple.

Dear Chris,

Nice explanation for something that is not so easy to describe.

My understanding of the yoni mudra is that there are various yoni

mudras. The one Swamiji showed us is like what you described

except the index fingers wrap around behind the ring fingers and

touch the tips of the ring fingers.

Hi Ardis,

Yeah, it's a little tough (did you try it?), but it's helpful (also

with the interlacede fingers) if you open your grip a little (allow a

bit more space between the hands).

Of course, this is kind of mute if you can't cross your fingers in the

first place. The one I really have trouble with is dhenu.

I am getting a little closer, hehe. Funny, the dhenu works like

clockwork for me. What about the visarjan? That is a complete

mystery for me, even with the short video of Swamiji.

Ardis,

Yeah, I've never actually used that one ceremonially, so I tend to

forget it. I re familiarized myself with it last time you posted on

it, and I think the key to that one is that (hands are back to back,

right on top) when interlacing the little, ring, and middle fingers,

the right hand needs to come in at almost 90 degrees to the left (in

relation to the direction of the fingers--the hands should be almost

flat, back to back), and they are interlaced only to the first joint

(I guess I may as well continue).

Once you have a firm grip with the interlaced fingers, look at the

index finger of the right hand -- it's not really doing anything but

pointing forward. The direction of the pointing index finger is the

continuation of the mudra. Imagine the tip of the index finger as a

diver, and the joined hands as a cliff. The diver dives off the cliff

into the "water" below, but instead of just coming to the surface

after his dive he lets the momentum of his arc carry him beneath the

cliff and into a submerged cave, where he surfaces and, surprise, he

finds another diver (a beautiful diver...and they kiss...) ok, enough

playing. You get the idea right? The right hand goes over in an arc,

coming up between the arms. Both index fingers are then pointing up

together and can be used to grasp the flower (extending the arms by

continuing the upward arc, and going out). Grasp the flower, bring it

back to the heart. Then go out the same way you came in...toss the flower.

I know how hard it can be sometimes to "see" how things work.

Sometimes it just doesn't click. Hopefully, this written description

will fit the missing pieces for you.
