Guest guest
Hi Effie, I couldn't resist responding to your post. I, too, am from a protestant tradition. It is difficult to move beyond the tenets of one's religious training. In my own experience, the church could neither assimilate, nor guide my personal experiences, so I was forced to look elsewhere (of course, this is an oversimplification, but that is another story). I believe that religion is for society. It is in the ascetic traditions that the ways and means of spiritual discovery and spiritual unity reside. As far as I can tell, it has always been this way. Even in vedic times, in India, people went to temple for worship, but they went to the guru for training. Unfortunately, according to my understanding, the Christian Church expunged much of its own esoteric tradition early on. It is a pity. It is fortunate that the Holy Spirit is not limited by such constraints, and can lead some of us to feet of those who are capable of guiding us into the presence of that One who is the very meaning of all religion and spiritual endeavor. May God continue to bless your particular journey.
