Guest guest
Here is a selection of quotations from Swami Sivananda Saraswati of Rishikesh. It was compiled in celebration of his jayanthi, September 8th. Enjoy. Master Sivananda's Heartside Companion... Give, give and give. This is the secret of abundance. Share what you have with others. Don't be miserly. Delight in the joys of others. The renunciate's only aim in life is to realize the all-pervading Self. Serve all. Love all. Feel that the Lord is in all as the Self of all. Become a person of high moral principals. Lead a life of righteousness. Its sweet fragrance will be all about you. It's not the robes that make the monk. Serve. Love. Give. Purify. Meditate. Realize. Be good. Do good. Be kind and be compassionate. Think of God as soon as you wake up and just before you go to sleep. Before beginning a sacred mantra or meditation, first repeat some prayer verses. This will quickly elevate your mind. Meditate on your mantra, feeling you are the all-pervading Self. Be plain and simple in your speech. Be simple in your dress. Be simple in your food. Take a broad view of things. Ignore the faults of others. Joyfully bear with the eccentricities of other people. Be great and noble- minded in whatever you do. Consider no one inferior to you. Praise others. See good in all. Treat the lowliest creatures with respect. Watch out for ripples of anger that arise in the lake of the mind. Before they get bigger, quell them immediately. Bear insult patiently. Calmly bear injury, suffering, failures and disrespect. Don't be elated by praise, pleasure, success and honor. Non-injury is the highest virtue. Control anger with love, forgiveness and compassion. Always speak encouraging words. Don't condemn, criticize or discourage. Don't raise your voice and shout at little children or subordinates. Be pure in your thoughts by thinking always of God. Keep your body clean and healthy. Always keep your clothes and surroundings clean. When you are in the midst of a group, you unconsciously can be dragged into idle talk. Be careful. Mentally repeat a sacred mantra. Thus you enjoy the benefit of seclusion amidst various distractions. Detach the mind from object by attaching it to the Lord. Every moment remember that death awaits you. Never fail to fulfill your duties. DO IT NOW - not tomorrow or the day after, but now itself. Opportunities come and go. Be vigilant. Use every opportunity for service. When a task is put off, other tasks accumulate and the opportunity is lost. Procrastination is the greatest enemy of a KarmaYogi on the path of selfless service. Don't wait for something to come your way. Create opportunities for service. Be aggressive in doing good. Adapt, adjust, accomodate; bear insult, bear injury - highest sadhana. Guest guest
Namaste ALL esp Jayadeva, What a marvelous list of quotes to print and keep at hand. My favorite (can there be such a thing among such richness?) is: "When you are in the midst of a group, you unconsciously can be dragged into idle talk. Be careful. Mentally repeat a sacred mantra. Thus you enjoy the benefit of seclusion amidst various distractions." The other day while I was shopping in Target with my daughter (a consummate shopper and my dearest darling), I kept repeating the Mahalakshmi Ashtokam. It helped me feel peaceful while directly in the middle of the "madd'ning crowd." It is so very kind of you to share this list with us.
