Dear Karen, What finally helped me to make peace with my Christian background, and even with Jesus (as if He needs me to make peace with Him) was all my explorations into eastern religion, then separating out what Jesus actually said and did from my experience with an institution, the church. Jesus spoke of loving all; it was very simple ~ Love one another as I have loved you. Yet not so simple in the doing, eh? And is this not what we strive for as we seek to connect with the Divine Mother? Another stumbling block for me with Christianity was ... no more avatars. Jesus was the one, the only, and if you don't believe, you will go to hell. (I do believe in hell, but only in the sense of the self-created suffering or bardo sense ... it has no permanence once we learn to truly "see.") This was very hard for me to accept, even as a young child. I simply was not able to believe that all the people of the world who have different spirituality belief systems were going to burn for all eternity. Yet Christianity has had its avatars; it simply chooses to call them saints. The one I have been most interested in of late is Padre Peo, who was simple in his love and complex in his suffering. The Divine is everywhere if we only know how to see it. I wish I could see it all the time, but even knowing this is a possibility, spurs me on and gives me hope and happiness.
