Guest guest
Swamiji said that "Pain is the lesson ... Pleasure is the examination " What do we learn from pain ? And why do we many times forget the lesson during pleasure? Can people introspect and share the lessons they have learned from pain ? Guest guest
latha i will try and think on this in terms of what swamiji is saying here as best as i understand it. i could be completely wrong i will just interpret as i have not heard much from him on this topic. the please is the examination. this we think we understand. the pleasure is the insight into reality, ourselves. this is related to bliss. we are removed from pain, and gratified on some level. we are experiencing the joys of understanding. but pain! this is the instigator! pain can tell us relatively simple things, like don't jump off the roof. both extreme physical pain as well as amorphous emotional pain have a lot of power to instruct but grasping the lesson is not always easy or immediate. we are making a mistake if we believe, spiritual life is only pleasure, or, without bliss we are lost. there must be a beacon that continues to flash even in storms of pain. pain is a great delimiter. i can go only so far. but then, maybe i can go farther. this is managing pain, or testing pain. extreme pain shakes me, i no longer no what i can handle, and i learn, i am a pebble in a limitless universe. that i can say any of this at all, is the pleasure part. , "Latha Nanda" <lathananda> wrote: > Swamiji said that "Pain is the lesson ... After reading the posting from Lathanandaji last night and remembering the posting from Yogar Swamigal above the following are my impressions. Pain and pleasure seem universal in this world. If one had to choose a favorite, it would probably be pleasure. My first recollected encounter with pain was intense inner ear problems around the physical ages of 6, 7 and 8 years old. After missing many months of school and having to repeat first grade a lesson was learned, introspection and observation. This did not mean the end of pain, mistakes or lessons to learn (some over and over), however the tools were now available and this led to no one to blame through recognition of karma and reincarnation. Then the prayers started in earnest, after all what was set in motion in this life and previous lives ? Tapas, apologies, and blessings. Guest guest
i have too many lessons (from pain) to recount here. interestingly, when i think of pain my first thought is of emotional pain. i cannot understand the lessons of physical pain and do not know if what i think applies to that. but i know that pain is necessary because without it we might not learn. it wakes us up, brings our attention to the now moment. without pain we would not be stimulated to grow. a life of pleasure would yield no real lessons. i like swamiji's definition that pleasure is the examination. wow. never looked at it that way before.
