For me, pain teaches dis-attachment. When the pain is acute or chronic, the

only way to "deal" is to let go of it. If you grab on to the pain it

intensifies. So we learn to the extent possible for us to not attach to it.

That is the lesson. Do not attach to your experiences.

When we experience pleasure, the tendency is to want for it to continue. So we

attach to it or to the dream of it in order to intensify it and make it

continue. What happened to the lesson we learned from pain? Oops, we failed

the examination. We are right back in the world of attachment.

So what is the goal? We want to go beyond the experience of pain and pleasure

to the Soul which always remains in the state of truth/consciousness/bliss. We

have to give up atttachment. We need to surrender to Maa and ask Her to use

those weapons of Hers and destroy Too Much and Too Little, The Great Ego and all

his warriors and Self-Deprecation and Self-Conceit. We can't go through life

wishing for more pleasure and less pain. That won't get us anywhere. As Shree

Maa tells us "The Soul has neither pleasure or pain. Pleasure and pain are

always in change but the Soul never undergoes any change. Always it remains in

Sacchitananda."

As with any goal, we have to look within and examine our priorities. So, do we

want pleasure/pain or do we want peace. Sadhana is for those of us who have

made the choice to lessen the dominance of the senses in our lives and go within

to find the eternal. We are so blessed to have all the tools of our "trade". We

have the inspiration and examples of our Gurus. We have pujas and homas and

songs and dances. We have all the creativity of the Universe within us, ready

to serve us in our worship. What Joy! What Peace is available to us!

Jai Jai Jai to All the Divine! (and that means you)

A personal note:

Once I was with Shree Maa in the temple. Suddenly she turned to me and said

"Ardis, on your path you will come to a crossroads. One fork will be the choice

for Happiness, the other fork will be for the choice for Peace. Always choose

Peace." I didn't understand the message at that time but more and more I am

finding that my true desire is for Peace.
