Years ago, my husband, my 20 month old daughter and I had a terrible

accident in Mexico. We were all injured...Months after the accident,

my daughter asked me if I remembered the angel. Since I had never

spoken to her of angels, I was surprised that she even knew the

word. She'd call out " going to the Mushroom this weekend?" And I'd

smile and say yes. Once she said "going to the Mushroom seems to be

very important to you." "I answered, the Mushroom is the center of

my life."

Dear Ardis,

Not to mix paradigms, but a number of years ago, my angel came to me

on Thanksgiving eve. He had come before, but not so specifically,

where he told me his name and that I would never be alone. Recently

as I have been sick I have felt enfolded in his wings, and they are

as your daughter said "big wings, full of light."

You are so luck to have lived near enough to the ashram to go there

every week. May the Mushroom be the center of all our lives. ~ Linda

Linda--

thank you for your beautiful angel story! Mother Kali shows Herself to

us in an infinite number of ways, and angels are one of Her favorites

it seems, at least in the West.

Does anyone know if there is a Hindu equivalent to angels? I think of

that spirit who lived in the tree in Ramakrishna's Panchavati, who

appeared to Thakur and to Tota Puri...he was described as a servant of

Shiva--sounds like an angel to me.

Kalibhakta,

As I understand it, in India such beings are known simply as devas,

which, I am given to understand means "bright being." In the stories I

have read, they appear to be men (usually) dressed all in white and

shining with their own light. No wings or anything.

I have often wondered if the "wings" on the mid-eastern angels (Jewish,

Christian, Muslim) are indicative of the glimmering motion of light surrounding

the being... like the many thousands of arms of the Buddhist bodhisattvas or the

arms of the devis.

WOW! that's a great insight. I am fascinated with angels--another

spiritual dimension (like Christianity) that Mother Kali has opened

for me. I'm ashamed to say I used to scoff when friends of mine

(New-Age and non-New Age) would bring up angels...let's just say I'm

not laughing any more.

also, I recently read a book that hypothesized that "angels" as

depicted in the mythology of the Near East and India were actually

members of an advanced humanoid race that shared the earth with humans

in ancient times. I'm not saying I buy the theory (the book's logic

had some big holes in it), but the author does document that the angel

phenomenon is VERY widespread.

For Ardis,

As I recall, my art history professor explained that the

Christian "winged being" angel image was borrowed from Greek

depictions of the goddess of victory, Nike. Similarly, the halos so

common in Christian art were borrowed from depictions of haloed

emperors, with the halo in those original depictions indicating rank

or nobility.

But it seems to me that those particular symbols--wings and halos--

may have been selected for a reason.....your intuition about wings

(and by extension, halos) seems very perceptive and could be very

right.

Here's a long-ish essay on Christian art, with example images:
