Guest guest
"02. Some Traditional worship pattern of South India, has the habit of offering animals as bali to maa devi and probably it should have been stopped and instead they have switched to lemon...as i have seen it they make a slight cut and fill lot of vermilon as the juices absorb all the vermilons...later they offer the same to Maa and cut in front of her as Bali." Dear Ganesh, This is very interesting; it makes perfect sense as so many Temples have now outlawed animal sacrifice (thank goodness). I would be very interested to learn anything more about this practice as it relates to Kali/Chandi. Thanks very much for your ongoing research!! To everyone: Sorry I am not so active right now but I am reading posts everyday and learning alot from all of you, as per usual. I am going to a big Sharad Navaratri Homam and will try to do the kind of retreat that we all did together. best love, sadhvi
Guest guest
Basically, we offer some specioal fruits to every God. Eg: Mango to Lord Karthikeya, similarly lime ius offered to Devi. Devi is sum total of all in the universe. we decorate her with tamas items like ornaments, satwic items fruits and flowers, and rajas items like hybiscus , and lemon. the concept of using vermilon along with lime to reduce the effect of drishti is also prelevant in south india. also, people squeeze the juice of lime fruits after cutting into 2 halves, then make it dorso ventrally urn shaped., use gingiely oil to light lamp. this lime lamp is to remove the negative effects of planets ( especially Rahu - the serpant planet ), during the Rahu time ( 3pm to 4.30pm on tusdays ), in durga temples but above all, lime has a property of vashya or attraction or storing energy. its used in tantric pooja also. lime garlands are worn to Devi, and the lime fruits are given to devotees as prasadam, under the belief that they get the sakthi of devi to their home. another practice is, when we meet very elderly people, we go with 2 limes. give them the 2 fruits. they return bak 1 to us. the same concept of energy transfer (blessings) is assumed here also. Guest guest
Dear Aravindji, Thanks. I learned one more thing..Mango offering to subramanya...reminds me the thiruvilaiyadal story. Lord ganesha taking mango first from shiva parvathi..and subramanya getting angry with all....it may please him so much. Nice explanation from the angle of tamas, satwic and rajas...yes i have seen that only red flowers are mostly used in devi worship. Just like to share with you all...My sister did one nice durga prayer for 26 weeks...she performed it in temple..she fasted for all 26 tuesdays and during rahu kal time on that day, she lighted lemon lamps in ascending order..one for first week and two for second week etc., and prayed fervently before durga mata offering everytime different flowers..the flowers once used should not be repeated again...she used 26 different varieties of flowers for getting good alliance as well as good job...now she is happily settled. About the lighting of lemon lamps..use of ghee is much preferred than gingelly oil or til oil as it is commonly known. Yes..lime do have the capacity of attracting and storing energy. You say > lime fruits are given to devotees as prasadam, under > the belief that they get the sakthi of devi to their > home. Perfectly true..the famous mangadu kamatchi amman temple near chennai has popularised this by asking people to come out with two lemons and giving it back one lemon...you can pray for fulfilled of any desire by doing this practice for some fixed number of weeks... You say > another practice is, when we meet very elderly people, > we go with 2 limes. give them the 2 fruits. they > return bak 1 to us. the same concept of energy > transfer (blessings) is assumed here also. > Actually, the saying is if there is nothing to take..atleast you go with lemon...as it is considered to be divine fruit. Hope my lemon research will end here...!
