i was told, and have read, that the savitre gayatri mantra is a

solar mantra and can cause overheating, so should not be

chanted without proper instruction. is that true? i like that mantra,

but now i feel nervous to chant it.

I have been reciting the Gayatri for 37 1/2 years with no apparent

ill effect. I've never had, nor do I seek formal initiation in

Gayatri mantra. Some people believe that the Chandi is haunted and

therefore shun it. I've recited the Chandi for 5 years also without

formal initiation.

Kalidas,

I hope you don't mind if I respond.

Savitri Gayatri is said to be one of the few mantras which can be

recited with full benefits, without initiation. It is also said to be

a protective mantra.

Yes, it is a solar mantra, and yes, it can create heat. It can also

create cold. It is a powerful mantra; it is very great. If you are

fortunate enough to experience any of these effects of Gayatri japa,

understand that like a compassionate guru, who puts her desciple

through various trials, Gayatri Mata will turn up the heat on her

devotees. This fire is the fire of purification. I have been assurred

that Gayatri Mata will not harm her devotees, so look upon these

experiences as graces, not objects of fear.

I was honored with such an experience once. It is a great blessing.

Jai Maa!

Chris
