Guest guest
SANKALPA OVERVIEW A sankalpa is a precise statement of purpose - where, when, and who is doing for what purpose. What is the format of a sankalpa within a puja? Om adya jambudvipe, (your country) dese, (your state) pradese, (your city) nagare, Devi Mandire, (name of lunar month) maase, (sukla or krisha) pakshe, (name of day) tithau, Satyananda Gotra, Shri (your name) krtaitat , (name of the deity) kaamah, puja karmaham, (name of the puja) karishye Where (location) - Om adya jambudvipe, (your country) dese, (your state) pradese, (your city) nagare, Devi Mandire, When (time) - (name of lunar month) maase, (sukla or krisha) pakshe, (name of day) tithau, Who for what purpose - Satyananda Gotra, Shri (your name) krtaitat , (name of the deity) kaamah, puja karmaham, (name of the puja) karishye WHERE (LOCATION) - Country, State, City, Temple (deshe, pradeshe, nagare, mandire) Om adya jambudvipe (this refers to our planet Earth) United States deshe (the name of your country) Colorado pradeshe (the name of your state) Hudson nagare (the name of your city) Devi Mandire (the name of your temple if you have one, else default to Temple of the Goddess) WHEN (TIME) - Month, Lunar Fortnight, Day (Maase, Pakshe, Tithau) What are the sanskrit names for the Waxing and Waning lunar halves of a fortnight? Waxing - Sukla Paksha (shukla means bright) Waning - Krishna Paksha (Krishna means dark) Pakshe means fortnight. What are the Sanskrit Tithis ? (Days) Tithi or Tithau means day. Example, Dwadasham Tithau or the 12th day. We know this because we have a lunar calendar handy, else replace with 12th June. Pratipad -1 -- Pratipad Tithau , Dvitiya -2 -- Dvitiyam Tithau , Tritiya -3 -- Tritiyam Tithau, Chaturthi -4 -- Chathurtham Tithau, Panchami -5 -- Panchamam Tithau, Shashti -6 -- Shashtam Tithau, Saptami -7 -- Saptamam Tithau, Ashtami -8 -- Ashtamam Tithau, Navami -9 -- Navamam Tithau, Dashami -10 -- Dashamam Tithau, Ekadashi -11 -- Ekadasham Tithau, Dvadashi -12 -- Dvadasham Tithau, Trayodashi -13 -- Trayodasham Tithau, Chaturdashi -14 -- Chathurdasham Tithau, Purnima -15 - Full moon-- Purnimam Tithau, Amavasya - 15 - New moon-- Amavasyam Tithau There are 15 tithis corresponding to the 15 days in each lunar fortnight. Number 15 has two depending on whether it is a dark/waning (krishna pakshe) fortnight and therefore is called Amavasya , and if it the bright/waxing (shukla pakshe) fortnight and therefore called Poornima .. If there are 2 tithis listed for a day, that means that at sunrise both tithis are in influence. If you start the puja/homa before sunrise, use lower number. If you start after sunrise use the bigger number. WHO IS DOING THE SANKALPA AND FOR WHAT PURPOSE Satyananda Gotra Your lineage. In this case, if you don’t have a gotra sign and most Americans DON’T, you can replace with Satyananda in honor of the teacher from whose lineage you got the teaching. (Karen CHA Michael) kritait Who are the doers. In this case Karen AND Michael. (LJ) - asya mangalarthat For the welfare of LJ. Replace with anyone’s name or omit this line entirely if you are just doing the puja/whatever without expecting it to benefit any one person. Shri (Shiva) Kaamah For the benefit or for pleasing Lord Shiva or any other deity. Puja karmaham Doing the worship. Karishye Please accept it. Guest guest
OM NAMAH SIVAYA thanks for this Karen. it seems taking a sankalpa before every act we do would be ideal, or else its probably not worth doing. let MA know our intention of an act, do our best at it, and let the chips fall where they(SHE) may. then the outcome irrelevant. just HER will. Thanks again, right on time.
